First Christmas - special cuddly toy ideas

Our DS2 will only be (at best) a few weeks old this Christmas, but we would like to get him a special toy for him with it being his first Christmas, like we did for DS1.

For DS1 we got him an original Paddington bear for his first Christmas - something special that can always be in his room, and that hopefully he could pass onto his children when he is grown up.

Any suggestions for DS2?!

Well aware that he won't have any knowledge that its Christmas etc, but it's something we did for our first that we would like to do again - more of a gesture of it being their 'first Christmas'

What's "an original Paddington bear"?

Can you get DC2 the same and start a family tradition?

timeisnotaline · 10/09/2017 11:08

I thought the jelly cat teddy was just teddy epitomised , like all the teddy bears in old children's stories, and got that. Not sure it's special enough for you though!

Hmm I didn't mean that in a nasty way in case it reads that way - it's just not any kind of collector item.

cheerylilthing · 10/09/2017 11:20

A steiff? They do the 'my first Steiff' bears

iirc Winnie the Pooh was a Harrods (or similar) bear so that could be another option.

Depends if it's a soft toy to be kept in a box or to be enjoyed really as the above can still have a story attached but they're to be cuddled & played with whereas a true collectable you probably wouldn't want to risk being covered in baby sick!

A plush Woody from Toy story?

OhOurBilly · 10/09/2017 13:37

DS was jus shy of four weeks last Christmas, we got him a Buster dog from the John Lewis advert plushy. Idea being that it was special to that year, I loved the advert and it made me smile when I was sat gazing at him in wonder and it was a limited edition type thing. (We got a spare that lives at my sisters in case it becomes the toy. )

Thanks all - some great ideas, particularly the Winnie the Pooh idea.

When I say an original Paddington, I mean an original Gabrielle one that's about 40 + years old, perhaps I should have said vintage!
DS adores him, and he is played with, yet very looked after at the same time.

We all have loved Paddington in both mine and husband family, so perhaps another Paddington is the way forward and they can have one each!

I realise the word cuddly probably wasn't the right word to describe what we are looking for!

For my first Christmas I got a teddy of an animal that rhymes with my name. I repeated the tradition for my son.

EG; Brian's lion. Jake's Snake. Amanda's Panda. Pat's Cat.

That's lovely @craftsy ! Bears are very appropriate in our family , so I think a bear is probably a must!

The Harrods bear? It has the year of birth sewn into the foot and is always beautifully dressed

tootsieglitterballs · 10/09/2017 17:52

That's a nice idea @Oly5 . DS1 has a Harrods beat that he loves!

Both my boys have a harrods bear.

Our daughter was 2 months old last Christmas and we wanted to do something similar. We got a bear from bears4u that had a personalised red jumper on saying her name and 1st Christmas 2016 on it. It's lovely.

snowmanshoes · 10/09/2017 19:26

Merrythought bears are very 'traditional' and you can also have them personalised.

stardust18 · 10/09/2017 19:41

If you go on Esty you can pick a soft toy and get whatever message you want on it.
My daughter was born in March and I've got her a unicorn with her full name, date of birth and birth weight on, bit of a keepsake for when she's older. My older daughter has one too. Or jellycat do beautiful soft toys or a stieff bear or white company have some gorgeous soft toys too.
Happy shopping
