Pre- Christmas UK getaway- ideas please!

We have made a tradition of going away for a few days before Christmas, eat lots of nice food, snuggle up in the hotel room and watch Christmas films, swim a lot in hotel pool and explore the town, maybe catch a panto etc. The children and us parents love it, but we fancy trying somewhere new (we've been to the same place for 3 years now!). Any ideas for a town/ small city that's nice at Christmas time, within 1.5 h of Bristol preferably. Not Bath or Stratford upon Avon!

Come to Cardiff! We have winter wonderland with ice skating (ice skating needs to be booked in advance) or you could go to the ice skating rink down the bay. We have theatres and an open air museum called St Fagans which is holding Christmas Nights this year on a few dates in december. Need to book this early too though.
