Reminder for people who buy consoles or games

If you buy a console or computer game this Xmas please do not forget to download updates before Christmas Day.

It's my ds birthday today and I've bought a PS4 game. There's 2 hours of downloads before he can play and I forgot to do it last night. He's 11 so luckily very understanding but others might not be so lucky especially with younger kids.

If you buy a new console (Xbox/PlayStation) you might have to create accounts. If your child already has an account it will be a faster process but there will still be updates since the day that the console was manufactured so be warned.

Yes!
we got the teen an Xbox one last year and it spent most of the day updating and downloadingGrin

Thank you for the reminder but I don't really even understand half of what you said about updates and accounts etc.
Think I just ask Adult ds for advice or a geeky friend of his to set it up once we decide between an Xbox or ps - probably looking at an older style bundle as it's for young ds so he doesn't need the connectivity of the new ones.

Oh thanks for the reminder. I have an Xbox one under my bed for ds's birthday next week! Best get it out, forgot about the updates saga!

Consoles (even older ones like Xbox 360/PS3) need registering with accounts. It's so that a younger child can see their content while older siblings can see older content. There's also updates you need for the machine which take a few hours to do. It's not like pre-Internet days when you can open the box, plug it in and play immediately.

Yep, often once a game is sent off to actually be made into a disc etc, the company making it are often still working on bug fixes, and a "patch" which you can download when you actually buy and play it. Good tip on this Eyebrows!

Oh yes, and load any games up before hand. Fond memories of waiting nearly an hour for Battlefront to install :/
