Edinburgh at Christmas

We have decided to go to Edinburgh for a couple of days before Christmas with some friends. It's a long way away from where we live so I'm currently looking at places to stay. Does anyone know the area who can advise me which apartment to go for? It's between these two:

www.booking.com/Share-ZVuYTf

The first one might be better because we will be able to leave our bags before and after check in but the reviews aren't as good and the location seems better at the second one.

Also if anyone has any tips for us! I know it's a while off yet but...🎄🎁❄️🎅🏽🤶🏼

York Place is very much more central.

NovaArt3mis · 09/08/2017 18:07

On location alone, definitely the second one.

Isadora2007 · 09/08/2017 18:12

Definitely the second. York place is so much more central and you will be close to the omni centre with plenty places to eat as well as right on the tram line. The winter markets/wonderland so much closer as well.

Piffpaffpoff · 09/08/2017 18:17

Definitely York Place. The other is at the 'wrong' end of town for the Winter Wonderland.

BizzyFizzy · 09/08/2017 18:18

Definitely York Place. The West End one is an awful location.

WreckTangled · 09/08/2017 18:18

Thanks everyone! Now just need to find somewhere to leave our bags but I don't think that will be a problem Smile

If you can't leave them at the flat, you are not far from Waverley Station and it's left luggage facility.

Piffpaffpoff · 09/08/2017 18:21

The bus station is just behind York Place, I think it has lockers for luggage.

WreckTangled · 09/08/2017 18:44

Perfect thanks! One more question....best way to get from the airport to near the apartment? Just checked trains and it reckons it's almost an hour 🙄

Tram! Door to door! The tram terminates at York Place.

There are buses too but the tram is much more fun!

hambo · 09/08/2017 18:49

Numer 100 bus or the trams go into centre

WreckTangled · 09/08/2017 18:51

I don't think I've ever been on a tram!

They are very nice!

We're going to Edinburgh too and have booked lunch in The Dome, I'm ridiculously excited about the decorations!

WreckTangled · 10/08/2017 07:24

Ooo what's The Dome?? I'm off to google. I've never been to Edinburgh. Or anywhere further north than Great Yarmouth on a school trip.

The Dome is a restaurant on George Street which is well known for the tremendous effort it makes with its Christmas decorations. It gets very busy so best to book if you can.

tiegysmum · 10/08/2017 08:22

The location of the second apartment is great, but the first apartment is also good. Its under 3 minutes by train to the centre of Town from haymarket and they run every 15 minutes or so, by bus it would take about 15 minutes and they are also really frequent. Winter wonderland and the German markets are a must as is lunch at the Dome, defo book this if you want to go. www.edinburghschristmas.com/

This site always has lots of good info and will be more detailed after August when the festivals finished.

VivaJen · 10/08/2017 08:28

You will have a great time @WreckTangled. One of my best ever Christmases was in Edinburgh. We go through every year for a day in December. If you like handmade things I highly recommend this shop - The Treasure Trove.
I'll have to go to the Dome this year, I've been in the summer but didn't realise how Christmassy they were. Excellent 🎄

WreckTangled · 10/08/2017 09:14

Thank you! Is The Dome suitable for children because we have five between us!

OP posts:
VivaJen · 10/08/2017 12:27

I've never taken children but I think so, I'm sure they offer a kid's afternoon tea.

WhatWouldTheDoctorDo · 10/08/2017 13:18

The Dome is fine for kids. Christmas lunch in the main dining area is a real treat. Phone and check availability for your dates now though - they opened up bookings quite early this year and all the weekend slots have gone I think.

WhatWouldTheDoctorDo · 10/08/2017 13:19

They offer kids version of the Christmas lunch.

Cailleach666 · 10/08/2017 16:24

Glad you decided on the York Place location- you won't be disappointed. Very central, beautiful architecture, up market location, very christmassy,

WreckTangled · 10/08/2017 17:44

Ok so we should do lunch at The Dome rather than afternoon tea? It does look lovely!

Can't wait for the Edinburgh Christmas market website to be up and running. I'm going to book flights when I get paid...

The Dome at Xmastime is fabulous.
