American Girl Dolls in the UK

Are these 'a thing'? A very quick google puts them at £150-180 ish which I am staggered by.

Those who have purchased them, is there some price loophole I am not aware of or are we genuinely talking £££££? Where did you buy them from?

Get 'design a friend' from Argos. They are just as good and a lot cheaper. DD has an American Girl doll which I bought on holiday, but it cost over $60 iirc, compared to the Argos ones for £20.
Also amazon do 'our generation' but they are not as pretty and are arounf £40.

AvoidingCallenetics · 07/08/2017 13:59

Meant to add that my dd has all 3 and the quality is the same.

QueenofallIsee · 07/08/2017 14:00

Thanks I will have a look - I was expecting a £60 job, almost fell off my chair

Tbh I don't know where you would get them in the UK. I presume the website would deliver but I think it would cost a bomb

We looked at American Girl dolls last year but Dd didn't like their teeth ( she thought it made them look like chipmunks!) Have a look online at Smyths website - Our Generation dolls ( UK version of AG doll, although made in Canada I think) which are actually much prettier and have lots of outfits and accessories available. We also looked at Argos design a friend dolls which again are a copy but much cheaper feel to them.

hatchypomagain · 07/08/2017 14:07

London Girl dolls - based in Westfield. Similar extras to AG but the eyes are nicer.

MasterOfDisguise · 07/08/2017 14:07

Whaaaaaat?!? Shock Never knew they were so dear, my SIL sent one over from the US for DD, it's beautiful and she loves it but I'm staggered at the price! All SIL said was that she'd had them when she was growing up and she wanted to share that with DD. Wow. Will treat Kaya a bit better now!

combatbarbie · 07/08/2017 14:08

My daughter begged for Leah last year, got my parents to get it as I wasn't paying that for a doll! The U.K. Version is journey girls which I got for my younger daughter and all the clothes/accessories fit the American girl dolls.

Nearlyadoctor · 07/08/2017 14:09

Meant to add Smyths often have 20% off on top of reduction offers as well. Bought Dd Holiday Hope doll and 3 deluxe outfits last year for Christmas for £51.

anditwasallgoingsowell · 07/08/2017 14:13

My dd loves AG and she has one that she bought in the US. To be honest half of it is the excitement of going to the stores (Google for pics they are amazing!). They have a range of historical dolls and every year they bring out a new 'doll of the year' they also have a range where you can choose its hair/skin and eye colour to look like you. You can have its ears pierced, get glasses, hearing aids and even an insulin pump, wheelchair or guide dog for it. You can buy clothes for the doll and matching ones for you. However you have to go to the US!

The closest in looks is definitely Our Generation from Argos and a fraction of the price.

leccybill · 07/08/2017 14:13

Lucky for us, DD prefers the Argos Designafriend dolls! I quite like them too.

anditwasallgoingsowell · 07/08/2017 14:14

Sorry I meant design a friend from Argos

Ulysses · 07/08/2017 14:21

Tesco sells Sindy dolls and clothes and they are the same sort of dimensions at the Argos ones. DD has 3 and various outfits at it's about £20 for the dolls and £9 for the outfits.

AvoidingCallenetics · 07/08/2017 14:38

What was the deleted message? What on earth can someone say on a thread about dolls that gets deleted?

QueenofallIsee · 07/08/2017 14:44

it was some MLM weirdo (my sisters cousins mate earns $$$$ doing nothing)

I googles the American Girl stores as suggested - holy crap! At 38 I am too old for one (or am I)

I bought mine in the US with extensive pocket money savings a couple of decades ago and I think it was eighty dollars then, so they have always been expensive!

Perhaps there are second hand ones on ebay for less money...

I might be able to bear to part with mine ("Addy" doll from the historical range) - PM me if you would be interested!

Otherwise agree that the Argos option is good.

Imfinehowareyou · 07/08/2017 15:00

The Argos ones are lovely. They come with a charm bracelet (for your child not the doll) and every outfit you buy comes with a charm. The outfits come wrapped in tissue and in a box - very posh!! They very often have half price outfits too. The dolls fit perfectly in the IKEA dolls bed. My DDs think they are American Girl dolls so win win!

Sosie91 · 09/08/2017 07:11

Our generation dollls in smyths are lovely. They hAve loads of extras xx

Llamacorn · 10/08/2017 16:55

I got my daughter an American girls doll last year from mydollboutique.co.uk and it did cost me £180 Confused
She has a lot of the our generation dolls accessories for her doll, and the our generation dolls themselves are beautiful and very similar to the AG ones. The deluxe our generation dolls are around £40 from smyths toys, and they have a 20% off event next month (11th iirc).
You can look at their huge range here, I'm thinking of the vets set and doll or the school building for my dd this year.

Llamacorn · 10/08/2017 16:57

Just to add, sorry, I don't think the design a friend ones from Argos are nice at all. They are quite a bit smaller than the AG ones and the quality is disappointing.
The main plus for us with the American girl doll over the others is her hair! It's still super silky and not a single tug after a year, the quality is fantastic.

WillowFae · 07/01/2018 23:07

They are not that expensive. Based on current exchange rate they are around £85. The ones in the UK are ones that have been imported and so you are paying the shipping, the customs, and then the seller takes some as they make a living through their shop. Buy them in the store over there they are $115.

And I TOTALLY agree with Llamacorn. The cheap brands that you can get over here are nothing like AG ones.

endehors · 07/01/2018 23:15

Agree with Willow and Llama that the quality is very good. Though I think one of our dolls, a few years old now, could do with a hair reroot (I think they do that in the American shops). Better quality still, I've found, are the Gotz classic dolls, similar price to the AGD. The hair has stayed pristine.

Foxjar · 08/01/2018 16:07

Gotz dolls are superb. Nicer faces, superb quality and European.
