Christmas Markets in Berlin

I'm looking for some recommendations as to what would be the best hotel/family friendly hostel in Berlin to stay in so we can go to the Christmas markets?

We went to Belgium with the kids last year and it was brilliant and have heard that the markets in Berlin are fab. Any advice, tips or general travel recommendations will be greatly received.

I'm feeling Christmassy already!

Can't really give any recommendations as to Hotel since this is the first year that we are going but I would welcome all tips.

I went to Berlin last year in the Spring and it was fantastic.

We stayed in a reasonable hotel Ludwig Van Beethoven. I don't know if near any markets but was surprisingly good for price
travelling around you just get their equivalent of tube /rail cards super easy

We were there in December last year and went to lots of the markets. They were all great but the best one by far was in the Gendarmenmarkt, a square in the centre of the city. It was the best Christmas market I've been to anywhere! Full of gorgeous hand-crafted things, food, drink, live shows etc.

We stayed at the Titanic hotel which is just off Gendarmenmarkt and was very nice. There are lots of hotels round that area, some cheaper. I'd recommend the location as it was walking distance to everything (including other markets).

Thank you so much for all the info. We're hoping to book somewhere in the next few days so I'll be furiously googling all the recommendations.

We looked in to going to Lapland but the prices were out of our budget but I still want a festive trip away. To be honest, anywhere with a decent hot chocolate supply and the kids will be delighted.

Just remember that it gets very cold - you will need lots of thermals, particularly as the markets are all outside.

There is a lovely open air ice rink, as well, if the kids are old enough to enjoy that.

Envy - very jealous

Went to Berlin with 3 kids a couple of years ago for xmas market and going again this year. The markets are fab and very very easy to navigate round - the kids enjoyed it.

If you have a small child, I would advise against a buggy (markets get very crowded and difficult to navigate but invest in a good babycarrier and padded suit for the child. Thermals, gloves, winter boots and handwarmers all a good shout. Buses super easy to get around on - we stayed near Tiergarten and found our way to the markets from there.

We are going with my husband's extended family this year and staying in a large Air BNB apartment. They seem to have lots of ones available.

Thanks for the reminders about thermals. I better check that last years still fit. Our youngest is nearly three so will walk or we can sit him up on our shoulders, I'm so excited. I'll check out air bnb too, I hadn't thought of that.
