What are Rudolph days!
Terribly worried i am missing out on something wonderful. ,

BiddyPop · 17/01/2017 15:33

Flapjack "Rudolph Day" is the 25th of every month, which many of us use to:

  • make plans for Christmas, look at our lists (budgets, gift lists, diary of outings etc), and get organized;
  • work on Christmas crafts if you don't get time otherwise (like Woolly's great crochet work, or perhaps putting together a jar of mince meat in spring to be nicely mature for mince pies in December, or making the pudding nice and early, or a batch of an alcoholic confection etc);
  • enjoy a little Christmas cheer - watch a Christmas movie, read a Christmassy book, listen to some Christmas music, or just enjoy a nice coffee from your Christmas mug...

Basically, just a little chance to remind ourselves to celebrate Christmas all year round! Xmas Grin

TheWoollybacksWife · 17/01/2017 15:55

I used to light my Christmas candle - it was called Christmas Eve and smelled very sweet. Our actual Christmas Eve tends to smell of panic, sellotape and bacon sandwiches Xmas Grin

purplecabbage · 17/01/2017 17:14

Rudolph days = brilliant! What a great concept and very practical too! My birthday falls on the 25th, maybe a Christmas themed celebration??

V taken with biddypop's suggestion to watch a themed movie etc. Thanks!

Have a living Xmas tree in a pot outside and I do give it loving attention, thanks and encouragement to grow a few more branches, throughout the year; maybe will now can concentrate efforts eg liquid feed, remulching on the 25ths!

Mrsmadevans · 17/01/2017 17:15

Bit like ours Woolly lol
Went to see my friend today she had loads of yankee candles from christmas going and loads of christmas ornaments , namely Santas about. I was envious I can tell you !She also had cards out (am thinking perhaps it is a bit lazy but really thinking I wish my hubba would let me be like that ) .
Gave the 3 fridges a damn good clean out of christmas goodies ,Yes 3 fridges , dd1 is a vegan so she has her own lol, the other one is a drinks fridge and one for the fresh chilled food . I gave the kitch a good wipe about and cleaned the toaster out , so many toasted crumbs!! Made a rice pud in my slo cooker omg just gorgeous! Jan nearly done fellow christmateers!!

flapjackfairy · 17/01/2017 17:16

Ooh i HAVE been missing something wonderful!!
I always thought i was the only one to (quietly) celebrate the 25th of each month as another 12th of the year back to christmas.
Oh i love this board!
I will start plans for my v first official Rudolph day forthwith!

Don't forget that Rudolph Day in January is also Burns Night
So you can celebrate with a nice dinner of :

Haggis though vegetarian Haggis is available , tatties (ok) neeps( yes)
Whisky (not for me but DH would)
Some pudding I cannot remember the name of made with oats, honey, cream, whisky and I think raspberries

I think I'll pass ....(my Dparents and GParents are all from Glasgow,, we never ate Burns Night Dinner , though my Secondary School did a Meal Night )

Xmas Grin

Oooh I love haggis neeps and tatties (drools)

The pudding is cranachan 70 and v yummy.

Well I know what I'll be having for tea on the first Rudolph Day of the year!

lifelongfrugaleer · 18/01/2017 06:36

Rudolf day, brilliant

HungryHorace · 18/01/2017 10:34

I've been reliably informed by my Scottish colleagues that the veggie haggis from Sainsbury's is really nice. I'm not sure I really fancy it, however!

AmyAmoeba · 18/01/2017 13:02

Love that Rudolph Days website. there are some good ideas for each month that I wouldn't have necessarily thought of like buying baskets after Easter for hampers.
My Christmas decorations are all neatly boxed and stacked but I want to clear out the attic before I put them back up so I'll either bite the bullet and tackle that black hole this weekend or more likely the decorations will still be sitting in the landing until next December.
Forced myself to walk away from a set of Christmassy mugs that I don't need and have no room for! I desperately need to do a massive declutter of the whole house. And now that the kids are big enough not to write on the walls, redecorating is long over due.
Started today with a trip to the local recycling centre.

flapjackfairy · 18/01/2017 14:54

Thanks 73kitty for link and 70isa for info
Think i might give burns night meal a miss though thanks. Will settle for a mince pie !

HairsprayBabe · 18/01/2017 14:59

I have a feeling we will fill up more than 2 threads this year! we are moving so fast atm!

MrsDilligaf · 18/01/2017 17:35

Hairspray that's why I love this thread. We quietly rattle on throughout the year and gradually fill up a thread or two and it's not so fast moving that you can't keep up.

Ocassionally we get a grumpy old boot who comes uninvited onto OUR THREAD (!!) and TELLS US OFF (!!) for mentioning Christmas in June. I do love it though.... they get very short shrift Grin

Mrsmadevans · 18/01/2017 18:19

Hear hear to the grumpy old sods in June being given short shrift .....how very dare they? Nights are starting to draw out...... has anyone else noticed ?it was still semi light at quarter to five here in Monmouthshire , hope all well... am still buying christmas bargains tat I was going to forgo all that but it seems I am a creature of habit lol

73kittycat73 · 18/01/2017 19:25

Yes, it is staying lighter in the evenings here too (Hampshire.). Sad I love the dark evenings and Christmas lights.
I'd love to buy more Christmas tat presents but just haven't seen anything yet.

Mrsmadevans · 18/01/2017 19:34

Have you not been to Wilkos or Poundland Kittycat? They have loads of christmas presents tat in there have a perusal I am sure you will find it to your liking lol

73kittycat73 · 18/01/2017 19:49

Hi Mrsmadevans, thanks for the ideas. I'll have a look-see if they're online. (Am agoraphobic.)

purplecabbage · 18/01/2017 20:16

Yes! To noticing lighter eves. Final bargain rummages - the florist has some cute wooden signages, the usual 'Have yourself a ....' etc. And some pretty carved wooden trees. I did not indulge!

Watched a prog from a couple of years ago - Alex Polizzi, scarily sharp and accomplished! Decorating her Clapham home. Made a point that struck a chord, which is to not necessarily buy items with festive print, but to go for plain festive colours, so as to be more versatile.

With that in mind I did just pick up some beautiful red napkins with a subtle gold thread running through, which are definitely very suitable for the big day and could also work for St Vals, adult birthdays and for posh dinners!!

Mince pies on the 25th is a brilliant idea! Esp given that last year's batch tasted great but had burnt bottoms, I could use the 25th as practice runs. DH is such a food lover and would def be on board.

I wouldnt want to eat too much Xmas nosh throughout the year as I love to build the anticipation of it! I think I may enjoy the prep/planning/making even more than the eating, which is a somewhat strange revelation!!

Not just the pies, maybe also trial/practice other dishes on Rudolph days. The vegan nut roast needs a thorough rework _starting again from scratch and then there are the sides and miscellaneous dishes and treats, recipes I have drooled over but never made. Most notably a good red cabbage dish. Brilliant!!

Ohh and home made chocs, def can work on those as I plan to make as many gifts as poss and no longer have the patience for needlework/knitting/anything that takes longer than a single eve. I have made a fair bit of choc and it is the most fun ever. I would love to work some Christmas flavours in and also some seasonal shapes!

Mummysh0rtlegs · 18/01/2017 20:46

Hello! I'm back minus the reindeer legs! I am going to start some spreadsheets and planning tomorrow, definitely need to be more organised and spend less. We seem to have spent a lot on things around christmas.

HungryHorace · 18/01/2017 22:07

Ooh. Yes, I need a spreadsheet!

I'm not starting until the end of April though, as I'm getting a bonus every month from March for being in Glasgow (March's is backdated 6 months, then its monthly after that until I leave Glasgow). That extra will pay for Christmas for us.

I'm considering the kids' birthdays for now: a balance bike and micro scooter for DS and bike and Kidizoom camera for DD. I've got the bikes, I'm just waiting for the free helmet deal which micro scooters had last year and for March's money for the camera. Hopefully it won't go up in price on Amazon before then!

TheWoollybacksWife · 18/01/2017 22:25

Excellent organisation there Horace and fabulous bonus structure.

DD2 turns 18 this year and she has expensive tastes like her mother. Having a huge family means that there is a milestone birthday or anniversary every year.

I'm keeping track of all things Christmas in my lovely planner. Thanks MrsD Smile

HandbagCrazy · 18/01/2017 22:26

Mrsmadevans you're not far from me

Thank you for all the baby wishes Xmas Smile

As for Rudolph days, how did I not know about this? I'm enjoying planning this one.

No more bargains for me but I am planning my Christmas crochet projects already - will use Rudolph day 1 for planning properly

HungryHorace · 18/01/2017 22:38

Which side of the family is large, Woolly? My dad is one of 12, so we are a massive family on that side! We aren't close to most of them, though.

They had to bribe us to go up there somehow...nobody was going to go on standard pay! But yes, it will come in useful for us, definitely. I've also just agreed to move teams in Glasgow, at the insurer client's direct request, so I'm hoping that is considered at pay rise time (not holding my breath, however!).

What will you get your DD for her birthday? I don't recall what I got for mine. Nothing amazing!
