Is there such a thing as Christmassy beer?

That isn't disgusting, obviously

DH's stocking looks a bit saggy so I thought beer... but doesn't seem very festive just to give him any old everyday IPA. Any nice Xmas beers, and where sells them?

DH likes ale type beers, occasionally a stout. Not really into lager.

Thanks!

not a u.k. beer but Leffe Christmas beer is amazing!

AbbeyRoadCrossing · 18/12/2016 23:01

I was going to say Leffe Noel too. There's quite a few Christmas beers about in supermarkets too

PickAChew · 18/12/2016 23:02

Chocolate porter or ruby ale?

AndNoneForGretchenWieners · 18/12/2016 23:02

Aldi do a Weihnachtsbier with a Christmassy label.

SpinALittleFaster · 18/12/2016 23:27

I'd try Tesco or Morrisons as they tend to have quite a good craft ale selection. There are loads of Christmas themed cask ales in pubs at the moment and I'm sure some breweries will have bottled their beers.

Want2bSupermum · 18/12/2016 23:29

Yes. I'm drinking one right now. I'm in Denmark and they have Carls Jul by calsberg and Jul-Hvidtøl by ceres. The latter is not very alcoholic at all and far too sweet for me. The calsberg one isn't bad at all.

This time of year, places that have a good range of bottled real ales are heaving with Christmas beers. The Wytchwood one (Bah Humbug, also 12 Drummers but haven't tried that) is fine and easy to find in supermarkets, and Aldi do indeed have some great beers in at the moment. Their coffee porter, while not explicitly Christmassy, is excellent.

Basically, most decent breweries will have a Christmas ale out (bottled) and while some of them aren't really Christmassy to taste, some are great. Look for bottle descriptions of fruit, spice, toffee etc, you can't go wrong!

Last year, I went to our (admittedly excellent) local independent offie and filled a large cardboard box with about 15 Christmas or midwinter beers for DH's birthday, which falls early in the year, because he'd not managed to get in enough Christmas beers for actual Christmas and was rather sad-faced about it. I honestly think it was his favourite present. Grin

Ooh thanks all. I did look in tracks but couldn't see anything seasonal, just the usual. Maybe I needed a bigger branch. will try a couple of places this week.

DH had a Christmas pudding beer yesterday, from Morrison's!

girlywhirly · 19/12/2016 11:57

Look in Aldi.

ChristmasSeacow · 19/12/2016 19:42

bauble that's exactly what I am after but I don't think we have a Morrisons anywhere near. There is an Aldi but it is a pain to get to, I might brave it though, thanks girly

Aldi have a few too. I got a snowman one from there not long ago :)

delilahbucket · 19/12/2016 22:31

My dp has started on the leffe Christmas beer this week and he really likes it. I get it from Beer Hawk.

ChristmasSeacow · 19/12/2016 23:32

Ooh I would like leffe Christmas beer a lot (shame I am pg Smile)

My Dh likes Blitzen, it's a ruby ale but can't remember which brewery. Sure bought it in a supermarket last year but this year I found some in a local deli.

RedRoseMummy · 20/12/2016 00:03

Lidl have a Christmas ale in their own brand range. It's quite nice!

deepdarkwood · 20/12/2016 00:05

There's a millionty out there (Dh is a home brewer). Have you got any microbreweries or specialist retailers locally? We have bad elfs : www.ridgewaybrewery.co.uk ; leffe as mentioned; ruby ales which feel Christmassy IMO; or try some of these www.telegraph.co.uk/food-and-drink/features/hoppy-christmas-the-best-festive-beers/amp/. We also have Elvis Juicestocked up for new year from brewdog - I've seen that in both Tesco & Morrisons.

goose1964 · 20/12/2016 00:05

Supermarkets are awful to get seasonable beers, saw one in Lidl but can't remember what it's called, somewhere like Beerhawk has a good selection

sunnyeyes · 20/12/2016 14:20

These are from Aldi. Any good?

DuchessofStBridget · 20/12/2016 14:39

B&M tend to stock a few festive ales, if you have a local one.

user1471505086 · 20/12/2016 21:58

DP loves Rebellion Red www.rebellionbeer.co.uk/beers/full-beer-range/rebellion-red.aspx. Waitrose sell it.

ChristmasSeacow · 20/12/2016 22:44

Thanks guys. That telegraph link has loads of beers that sound delicious but I think I might need to order them and it's probably too late for this year . I'll bookmark for next year though and keep my eye out in case there are any in shops.

I do have B&M do will try there and whichever is easiest of Aldi /Lidl to get to. Thanks!

Ooh and I am going to Waitrose anyway! Will look out for the rebellion red.

I am not an ale drinker and am pregnant anyway but reading some of these beer descriptions is really making me want it!

Not sure these are Christmas beers as such but would make a nice Christmas present!
