What would you get for young couple just moved in together?

Nephew and his girlfriend. Don't know her very well. In the £20 - £40 range. Something to represent the fact that we respect that they are an adult couple rather than "little nephew and his little girlfriend" if you see what I mean?

Or maybe just something nice?

When we bought our house lots of people got us flowers but we didn't have a vase. I then took flowers to another friend's housewarming and she had to put them in a mug in the sink, so I recommend a vase!

A gift voucher to a place like Next or IKEA. So they can enjoy choosing something together.

I would give a voucher along with a bottle of something maybe.

Unless you know peoples tastes, colour schemes or what they need it's difficult buying a present.

When you get your first home together it's nice to be able to choose and buy things together.

Depends if you want to give them a practical grown up gift (like a slow cooker) or something decorative (like a "home is where the heart is" type print).

Both equally lovely. Personally, I appreciate a good bottle of wine (you could get one with the year they move in, and say either to keep or to mark a special occasion )

Vouchers, or cash. I've just got my first place and if another person inflicts their own taste and preferences onto me via a gift I think I'll blow my top

I know this sounds ungrateful, but it's true. The only thing they'll be short of right now is cash, unless they've specified something.

When we first moved in together we got a lot of Ikea vouchers for Christmas (which was amazing!) but also there were things that we put off buying for months/years cos couldn't justify paying for them, like good quality pots and pans, decent cutlery, nice towels. We've mostly bought these things in TK Maxx since so if you were looking for inspiration maybe pop in there?

I would absolutely not reccommend anything decorative though, everyone has their own tastes and and I'd have hated anything like a plaque saying 'home is where the heart is' or equivalent

I've been in the position of being very grateful for anything but was so pleased when an aunt bought be a top of the range clothes dryer. Not the coolest but maybe £30 top of the range item rather than £30 on 6 basics. If you see what I mean.

I'd ask what they needed. I'm useless at guessing.

Can you not just ask them? We received loads of useful stuff as engagement presents as we got engaged not long after we moved in together but people generally asked us what we wanted/needed so we didn't get like 10 of the same thing. Failing that I agree with vouchers to places like John Lewis, Debenhams, Next, Ikea that kind of thing.

Meadow That would make sense but that would involve admitting to dh's family that we don't do all our Xmas shopping and have all presents wrapped by the End of November. Which may cause heart attacks and no one wants to have family in hospital a Xmas.....
