Youngest ds has asked for the new pokemon game for christmas. He currently has a 2DS and I don't really want to have to but a 3DS unless I really have to. Does anyone know if the game will run on the 2DS? Online articles seem to vary in their opinions. And if it does run on the 2DS will it interact with players using the 3DS ok?

Yes it should work on the 2DS. My ds plays it on the 3DS but doesn't use the 3D feature so it should be fine without it.

dementedpixie · 12/12/2016 15:36

And you mean the 2DS that doesn't fold up?

OwlMother · 12/12/2016 15:38

No, I mean the older version - the pre 3DS type.

In fact the box says it can be used with the 2DS (Ds has both games!)

OwlMother · 12/12/2016 15:43

Fantastic, thank you! Should be safe to assume the 2DS and 3DS can talk to each other, or I'm sure it would say it wasn't compatible or similar.

Then no it won't be compatible. You need the 2DS console (which doesn't fold closed like the 3DS or the 3DS

It doesn't work with the DS, DS Lite, DSi, DSi XL (do you know which console it is?)

This is a 2DS

OP this is the 2DS. Is it this one he has? Pokémon sun/moon will work fine with it. And will interact with the "new" 3DS or 3DS XL, because the software is the same.

If he has an old DS (an old flip one) then 3DS games will not work.

There was a deal on in Smyths where you could get the 2DS console and the game for £90 (which is pretty good when you consider that the game alone is £30 - £35) but they don’t seem to have any stock at the moment. Might be worth keeping an eye on this though as that’s probably the cheapest you’ll get the console and the game combined.

I do appreciate that £90 isn’t exactly small change though, especially if you’ve already bought your DS some presents.

Tesco do have these in stock but you’d have to buy the game as well - you’re looking at £100 minimum really.

It might be worth trying to get the console second-hand if that’s an option - there’ll definitely be some people upgrading to the 3DS XL from an older version this year so you might get lucky on eBay or those Facebook buy and sell groups.

Ah, ok - thanks everyone. Think I have misunderstood what ds has - it's an ld flip style DS, so will be no good. Will have a look at the links although the 2DS that doesn't fold doesn't look the same quality as the others, might just have to stretch to the 3DS

owl, DS2 has just got the new style 2DS with Pokemon moon built in and he's really pleased with it.

Got it from Game for £89

ImCatbug · 12/12/2016 21:21

How old is he? The 3DS is not recommended for children under 7/8 because the 3D feature can damage their eyesight and cause headaches (though it can be turned off).
A 2DS is exactly the same as a 3DS, but sturdier (because no hinges to break) and without the 3D feature. I definitely recommend them, they're great consoles. All games for the 3DS play on the 2DS.

DD plays hers on a 2DS, 3DS doesn't work with some eye conditions

OwlMother · 12/12/2016 21:45

days is about to turn 11. He won't be able to use the 3D facility as he has an eye condition that means he can't "see" 3D. I'll have another look at the 2ds, maybe I dismissed it too quickly- would be good to make that kind of saving!

dementedpixie · 12/12/2016 22:02

My ds is 10 and uses a 3 DS with the 3D turned off as he doesn't like it. The 3DS just looks neater and more compact than the 2DS so I wouldn't buy a 2DS
