What are you eating on Christmas Eve?

Looking for some inspiration. We're having traditional Christmas food on Christmas day itself, (and again on Boxing day when we are visiting DH's family), but am unsure what to do for food on Christmas Eve. We're just eating at home so just me, DH and toddler DD1 to feed, so don't want to do loads. What are you having?

Pasta salad. Quick, easy & not too heavy. Not much washing up either which is a bonus.

We're going to the theatre matinee but will go to cafe rouge after for dinner. Not my first choice but we went years ago and the kids love it with all the twinkly lights and bustle in town so our tradition now!

ForTheLoveOfGrace · 10/12/2016 10:18

Lamb shanks in the slow cooker here, no mess no fuss plus In laws over & it's their fav.

We're coming back to the UK and staying with my parents this christmas, my mum is Portuguese and christmas eve is more celebrated in Portugal than christmas day, and traditionally you eat fish. It will involve a lot of bacalhau which is not to everyone's taste, but I love it! I don't often get to eat my mum's excellent Portuguese cooking these days so can't wait! Xmas Smile

We always have an Indian Takeaway on Christmas Eve :)

GinIsIn · 10/12/2016 10:27

My family are mixed nationality so we celebrate both days normally - for Christmas Eve supper I usually do a whole salmon en croute with a champagne sauce, new potatoes and green beans, then on Christmas Day I do a more traditional roast type meal for lunch, although never turkey - it's a bit boring! Last year was a huge fillet of beef, the year before was a 3 bird roast (total pain to do from scratch - won't be doing that again in a hurry!) and the year before was a Wellington.

This year however I'm heavily pregnant so we are going out to dinner on Christmas Eve, before roast gammon on Christmas Day.

Fish pie at lunchtime (made the week before and frozen). M&S buffet supper in the evening after the crib service.

thecrowabby · 10/12/2016 10:54

Honey glazed roast gammon and mash Grin it's a tradition in my family from when my nan was a child

KitKat1985 · 10/12/2016 11:28

Oooh Indian take-away sounds good.

Truth be told all your meal plans sound awesome. It's making me hungry!

We're going out for dinner with friends. Would traditionally be a lasagne, salad and garlic bread followed by a trip to the pub but things are a bit different this year.

BroomstickOfLove · 10/12/2016 11:32

Lentil soup, bread, cheese, salad. I like to have something simple and frugal before the excess of Christmas Day.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 10/12/2016 16:33

Cheese board, sausage rolls (meat and veggie) and pickles here. Mince pies and meringues with cream and fruit for pud.

blueskyinmarch · 10/12/2016 17:00

We always have lasagne, garlic bread and salad plus a pudding of some sort. I think someone is making a cheese cake this year. I think I almost like Christmas Eve better than Christmas Day because everyone is relaxed and chatty and full of excitement.

Princesspinkgirl · 10/12/2016 18:22

This year me and my other half have been invited out to a Christmas dinner on Christmas Eve I will be due to give birth Christmas day so that will be interesting lol normally I would do just a takeaway because it's easy

IHaveBrilloHair · 10/12/2016 18:25

Pizzas.
Pepperoni, four cheese, anchovies and olives, and barbecue sauce with blue cheese, all washed down with chips Grin

HungryHorace · 10/12/2016 18:33

Chicken casserole for us so we can leave it in the oven cooking while we go to a local nativity service.

BoboBunnyH0p · 10/12/2016 19:40

It's tradition that we have a Chinese takeaway.

ElfontheShelfIsWATCHINGYOUTOO · 10/12/2016 20:17

had take away and it was a little lack lustre - I dont know seemed a bit scrappy...I always like the sound of things like cold buffet - ploughmans - dont know why Blush

this year I hope to be in my fav chinese in china town however.

monsterbookofty · 10/12/2016 20:18

Ikea meatballs and the sauce. Blush

MoodyOne · 10/12/2016 20:19

We buy loads of those Iceland party platters and eat them Wink

Ellapaella · 10/12/2016 20:32

We do buffet but as a child my parents would do a roast gammon with jacket potatoes - what happy memories coming back from the candlelit service on Christmas Eve to the smell of baking ham. We don't have it because it gives DH terrible heartburn but I wish we could!

NotCitrus · 10/12/2016 20:39

I'll be collecting the turkey etc from the butcher on the 23rd, and usually get a steak pie and lots of sausages too, so will bung one or the other in the oven. I'll be cooking red cabbage that night too, for the next day.

SealSong · 10/12/2016 20:43

We're doing Mexican this year - tacos and margaritas Smile

Usually do a buffet, but that's happening on Boxing day this year.

goose1964 · 11/12/2016 15:41

We're having meatball lasagne, but for year we had fish pie and peas

WritingHome · 11/12/2016 19:27

We usually have baked ham with pickles and fresh white bread etc. But this year we will not be at home so not sure what we will have
