For my dsis- art student, dresses in a slightly grungy 80s way. Was just browsing topshop website for a skirt or a top (a bit high risk but last year went for a tatty devine necklace that not convinced ever got worn). then realised i am completely out of touch with 'the kids' where do cool early 20s creative types shop for clothes? Any ideas?

Some thing from urban outfitters but not clothes. I think clothes are very personal.

Get a naked make up palette. Price matching on john Lewis- usually about £38 not £34. The smoky eyes one is nice but so are they all.

I wouldn't buy clothes for my 21 year old- too personal.

Anthropologie or H&M though I wouldn't want to guess sizing. For general bits & bobs Oliver Bonas seems to be very popular atm too.

I often get my son's very fashionable girlfriend a Top Shop voucher. Wouldn't trust myself to choose anything for her... She has tons of clothes and I wouldn't know what she has. Top Shop vouchers can also be spent at Miss Selfridge and other Arcadis stores. Throw in a fashion magazine for something to unwrap?

Pretty make up bag from a high street store. New Look, HM etc. In fact Matalan have some really nice ones in at the moment with initials on them for a personal touch.

I then fill it with 3 or 4 make up items. No foundations or bronzers etc but a nice mascara, eyeliner and lipstick maybe? I get all my make up on fragrancedirect.com where it's discounted

Then I'll throw in a little nail file, hair bobbles, maybe a pair of false eyelashes or a little compact mirror or hairbrush - Primark is excellent for this kind of thing

Useful if you know the recipient wears make up, well thought out if you know they are not sensitive to any products.

Such a gift would n't be either of those things to me.

My mum buys me clothes I'm 22 and she manages to get stuff I wear (not always but mostly).
Go for similar things to what she wears and get gift recipes so she change if she wants.
Checked shirts I find fit most people style also skinny jeans as you can dress them up or down.

Thanks all for the ideas! Budget is £30-£45. Am going to pop into oliver bonas and look over the jewellery- maybe aiming for something cheap there, then pop into a few of the other suggested shops thereby spreading the risk!

I would definitely choose urban outfitters and MAC.

If you bought her a necklace last year and you're convinced she has never worn it, I wouldn't waste any more money on buying something she may not use.

I honestly would give her a voucher, she will appreciate it more being able to buy what she wants and probably make it go further in the post Christmas sales.

I dress kinda grungy and alternative and tbh, tend to end up buying stuff online rather than in high street shops.

She might like the kat von d make up range - it's vegan, grungy, fab stuff. Under budget as well. You can get it in Debenhams. I believe there is a perfume and eyeliner gift set released atm would be great for Xmas.

I think clothes probably too risky/too easy to get wrong.

Instead, maybe:
a Chillys bottle (they seem expensive but definitely worth the money)
socks (Dr Marten usually have some fun ones)
undies - 'nice' knickers, that are an upgrade from what she might buy herself
art students often get through loads of paints and canvases, so maybe some of those

I teach 20 yr olds and they all want their own coffee machine if this helps. (I appreciate a coffee machine is not clothing).

I would probably just ask Dsis what she would like as there's no point buying clothes/jewellery that she won't wear.

Alternatively art supplies or a gift card and a re-useable coffee mug.
