My dd (12/year8) has put make up on her Xmas list. I don't really do make up myself and haven't for a long time but I'm happy for her to make this move into cosmetics and stuff if that's what she wants but I'm clueless as to brands etc.
What is a good brand to start out with? I'd like to be able to give her a makeup bag with a few things in so she has a selection to try out. Will she need brushes? I'd do what kind? Help me please!!!

I am v old fashioned, and myself only wore make up age 14 onwards for special parties. I would include

  • v light foundation (As I said, I'm virtually Puritan so would probably just give tinted moisturiser at age 12)
  • blusher
  • fun cheap eye shadow range to experiment with
  • a couple of cheap lipsticks, one slightly rosy, one v red for fun
  • clear mascara
  • MAKE UP REMOVER!

Hi can I ask a question please? My daughter is showing slight interest in make up she is 12 and a half but she wears glasses. I don't wear make up so this sounds silly but do people with glasses still wear eye make up? Thank you

ElizaSchuyler · 28/11/2016 11:03

Yes I wear glasses & wear eye makeup.

Bobsmum02 · 28/11/2016 11:26

Yes I wear glasses sometimes and still wear eye make up too.

Same here deb, just requires removing glasses and a mirror smushed up against my face so I can see Grin

With regards to the RT brushes, you're best looking on Amazon. Superdrug or Boots, unless on offer, sell the core and eye sets for £21 each usually and they can be found for around £12 on Amazon.
NYX is a good starter brand, as are Makeup Revolution and MUA in Superdrug - the makeup here is so cheap but actually offers really good application!
And yes, as said. If she watches YouTube tutorials, she will appreciate some decent brushes.

I want to continue babbling. I'd start her off with a couple of eyeshadow palettes, again MR and MUA are fab, maybe a neutral one with browns and nudes and one with more colours. MR have a huge palette for around £20 that had gone down to £8 in a sale but I'm not sure if that's still the case. I know it went to £10 for a long time last year.
Some base makeup such as a foundation and a powder, blush and highlight. The only thing with foundation is finding what will work for her skin type. You can, again, get palettes with a range of blushes, highlights or bronzers.

I suppose it's going to depend on whether she wants to makeup to experiment and have fun with (crazy eyeshadow) or to wear out and about.

You won't need to spend a fortune though. That'll happen when she's 16 Grin

I was shopping with 2 teenages yesterday, 13 and 14. They loved superdrug makeup, there is a make that looks the same as too faced, sorry cant remember the brand name. They also liked revolution, good deals on some sets just now. They were happy with brushes from primark, or you can get new oval brushes on amazon.

PossumInAPearTree · 28/11/2016 12:44

I think the too faced dupes are Revolution.

ElizaSchuyler · 28/11/2016 12:50

After extensive testing dd declares that Superdrug's MUA matte lipstick Fawn Fancy which costs £1 is the best dupe for MAC's Velvet Teddy which is THE in shade amongst her friends.

blueskyinmarch · 28/11/2016 12:51

I wear glasses and i do eye make up. I actually love how my glasses intensifies how it looks!
