What books has he enjoyed before?

Hard to make suggestions without knowing what books he's into

The Mortal Engines series - my lot have all enjoyed them (and so did I)

I'd definitely second Ready Player One if he hasn't read it. Yet to find anyone who doesn't like it, teen or adult.

Otherwise, what sort of things does he like generally? If sci-fi, has he read Dark Eden by Chris Beckett? (not YA specifically, but main character is a teenager & then 13 y/o dd liked it a lot)

Sarah j Mas books? My 13yr old DD has just read through both sets and loved them.

Bit random but DS12 has really enjoyed goodnight Mr Tom. They're reading it in English lessons

The big thing at DC"s school are the Ransome Riggs books - Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children, and the sequels.

Got all 3. Should actually list everything he's got in his room as it might help others after the same thing.

Trying to think of other slightly less well known books dd has liked. Has he read The Wall by William Sutcliffe, or the Insignia trilogy by SJ Kincaid?

The Cherub series by Robert Muchamore. Dd 15 loves them.

Michael Morpurgo books are fantastic. I just read Private Peaceful which is about a young soldier's experience of the war.

My DS enjoyed Ready Player One and The Martian - there's a bit of robot sex in RP1 and lots of swearing in The Martian but they're otherwise age appropriate. DD enjoyed The Secrets of Drearcliff Grange and the Wells and Wong detective series but they do have entirely female casts which your DS may not be up for. Fly By Night by Frances Harding is excellent, I can't imagine any 13 year old keen reader not enjoying it (her other books are excellent but perhaps less accessible).

Yep loved Wells and Wong. Have your DC tried The Red Blazer Girls,he lived them too.

In that case Drearcliff Grange definitely worth a go - not so much a YA book, more a tale of the uncanny for adults that just happens to be set in a girls' boarding school and have no unsuitable content.

Ordering Drearcliff for his sister,she'll love it.

The Demon Road trilogy. DS 13 just finished the last one and really enjoyed it or the Maze Runner series.

I second Maze Runner, also The Hunger Games trilogy.
