Is this ok for an Xmas present

So I am getting all my children a set of books as ONE of their presents this year as my 2 older girls have asked for their favourite ones but I'm stuck for my 4 year old because she's only just starting to learn to read in school and was thinking of getting her the chip/biff/ kipper selection as she reads these in school and is familiar with them but is this ok for an Xmas present or should I go for different books?

Oh I think the biff and kipper books are better off left at school, they're pretty dull

Don't get her school books, there so dull! Mine still love Julia Donaldson in year 1.

Dd loved some of the books in the early reader series. At 7 she still enjoys them now. Favourites were

The kitten with no name

The three little witches

Or would a classic book such as Alice in wonderland / brothers Grimm collection / secret garden / Hans Christian Anderson etc work? One of the illustrated ones for you to read with her?

At 4 I find factual books good: about the solar system, How he body works, that sort of thing

Reason being that he writing is broken up into small chunks/text boxes and there's enough pictures to keep them interested while they learn to decode the harder words

Usbourne books are good - the lift the flap ones about medieval castles was popular in our house around that age

That sort of book isn't too intimidating / discouraging if they don't know all the words, like you need to for a story book, as there's still lots to see and enjoy

oh and please don't get her chip/biff/kipper! home reading is supposed to be enjoyable!

I got my 4 yo the famous five books for her birthday. We read them together, taking turns each paragraph. She's also enjoyed the faraway tree books. For Christmas I've got her a book about the body, a dandy annual and some early reader classics.

DD loved Usborne First/Young Reader books. At this stage they go through books quite fast, I would go for one they need help reading but may be able to read in a year on their own.

Online TK Max this week are selling the full Winnie the Pooh collection for around £35, it's usually over £100'and is in a lovely box. They were also selling the Peter Rabbit collection for a similar price. Both really good value if you think your DC would be into a classic

There really is no point getting biff, chip and kipper if shes reading them through school as she'll gt them all from them anyway. If you specifically want ones she can read herself, go for a diffeent selection, look at book people collections as they're really cheap and choose some first readers that look interesting. Songbirds by julia donaldson, or the ladybird ones.

Otherwise you could get her ones she'll love that you can read to her.

Above titles were the kick off pont of my literature loving child. Read to her all the time and then she read to me. GCSE a star English lit in year 10, now taking a level eng lit and on to uni.....small acorns and all that

I'm going to go against the grain : my DC1 was given a set of Biff, Chip and Kipper books aged 4 and he (and DC2) LOVED them and read them to death. We read lots of other books too but spent lots of time reading those.

I'm with sue - I got Dd4 that set and she still absolutely LOVES them and asked me to read them as bedtime stories

Mind you her actual school reading books are even more boring so maybe that's why!

My daughter loves the M&S early reader books. They have all the fairytales etc.

No. Biff and Chip are one of the reasons I didn't have a third child!

I am getting my ds 4 (also) the julia Donaldson audio collection and another paper book, he's starting to collect them. He's also getting a ladybird my first dictionary I got him the Chad valley 10 books from argos for his birthday and he loves them. Especially as there are questions on the back page for him to answer.

I think your right, I would be looking for something better. I guess I was just thinking because she's familiar with those books it made hut be batter for her but I've just looked at the book people and there are some really good books there and some good collections too!
