In search of the best stollen

I had stollen for the first time last year. It was amazing. I can't believe it had passed me by.

I am very excited about it appearing on the shelves again. But are there any that I should try/best places to buy it?

Lidl stollen bites yum

Tesco finest is the best by far. I can tell you this after completing extensive taste tests.

You're welcome Grin

I've made the one from Dan Lepard's cookbook (Short and Sweet) and it's gorgeous. The dough is quite stretchy and tricky to handle the first time you make it, but it's worth doing.

Lidl mini stolen for me. I bought ten boxes yesterday. It's all I can do not to attack it now.

I've never had stollen, what is it like?

Microwaste · 31/10/2016 07:34

I find the lidl one a lidl dry too. Wink
Their chocolate covered rum and raisin marzipan logs however...
I've totally avoided even looking at the Christmas aisle yet, I darent think about how many I shovelled in ate last year

I will try out the Aldo stollen though, bit more of a trip to get there, but sounds like it is worthwhile. The main problem I have is that I'm the only person in the house who likes ANY Christmas goodies - mince pies, stollen, lebkuchen etc. so I eat the lot.

Co-op stollen bites are sublime. And I've tried a lot of stollen to reach that conclusion

Undersmile · 31/10/2016 08:39

I agree with chattygranny, the best stollen I've ever had was made by a colleague from the Delia recipe. Now that was the most amazing stollen ive ever tasted.

You should try Bettys.

It is real Stollen and beats the Supermarket substitutes (with wierd sticky marzipan) hands down.

Can be bought online but not till we are closer to Christmas

BikeRunSki, I shall remember that it's so vair naice next time I go there. 😉
Chattygranny, I love Betty's so I'll have to try them next.

Oh my goodness. You reminded me that many years ago I did some work for a German company and they sent a stollen at Christmas. It was traditionally made and utterly delicious! I have never found one yet to compare. Maybe I should go online and treat myself......
