Child in question (not mine!) is very smart, loves analytic thinking, numbers, maps, charts etc. Has a birthday close to Christmas so I will be also doing a clothing gift, but any ideas for toys or games would be so welcome.

Lego?

linandleo · 20/10/2016 12:18

Thames and Kosmos do ace science kits and the like.

I usually buy mine from here www.brightminds.co.uk/science-tech/c5 as they tend to be cheaper than elsewhere.

There's a lot of other brilliant stuff on the site that might do too.

Oh excellent, thank you for that link, I'm off to browse! Lego is great too but I think kid has enough.

The game 'Rush Hour' is great for kids who like logic puzzles etc.

What's your budget? Plyt is a great game, my 6yo asks to play every day.

I bought my smart 6 yr old nephew this last year laserpegs which is effectively lego with LED lights inside. He loved it but did need some help from daddy to build it. It's compatible with lego though and you can make other things with it so it should be fun to play with over the coming years

ThatGingerOne · 20/10/2016 18:35

A modern Rubix cube? You can get all different types of them now.

My ds is this-coming 7 though. I bought a 10 yr old an electronic bookmark that's a dictionary & it's pretty good as he's an avid reader so will get one of these & a book from us.

He's lego mad so that's the most of his wants!

BrieAndChilli · 20/10/2016 18:44

At 6 my very smart DS loved the Osborne lift the flap books - inside science, inside the solar system etc.
Science kit
Maze ball was a big hit.

I used to go to this store, but my local branch closed Sad

They have 3 other stores, and you can order online. Lots of great gift ideas there.

AbiBranning · 20/10/2016 18:48

DS got Stikbot studio, you use a phone to make stop motion movies. DS and his uncle had great fun with it.

HalfStar · 20/10/2016 19:22

Wow amazing ideas here , I am taking note. Plyt might be the winner for the kid in question but everything looks brilliant. Thanks all Flowers

I just ordered a subscription to the Whizz Pop Bang science magazine for a smart, science mad 6 year old!

evelynj · 20/10/2016 22:13

Ooh rain, that looks like it might be good. Lots added to the Amazon list for ds
