DC2 due end Oct... what do I get him for Christmas?!?!

On maternity leave, so I've started doing the present shopping and suddenly realised that, by the time Christmas Day arrives, I'll have TWO children, rather than the (so far) normal one.

DC1 was nearly 10 months for his first Christmas - this baby will be 6-8 weeks. I've ordered a teething toy. Which he will be too young to use.

Normally, I wouldn't bother and just put some money in a savings account, but I need to set expectations with DC1 who is nearly 5yo. I'm starting to panic... and I haven't even contemplated the stocking yet...

Any ideas? I'm completely stumped.

What about a baby's first year book which your older son can 'help' to fill? Or one of those clay footprint kits?

We'll be in the same boat. Only buying the baby something so dd who's 2.5 will know that other people also get presents. We're getting a big sister/little sister tshirt set so one each to open. Wanted to get her one of those soft photo books but may be a bit pricey for me at the moment.

There are companies that make the baby's first outfit into a keepsake teddy if that's something you're interested in?

I'd get a couple of first step toys that you are likely to need in a few months. I bought my nephews these toy monkeys from sainsburys. The eyes were goggly and each hand and foot had a different sensory effect on them. They loved them from 6 months plus but we're only 12 weeks at Christmas.

We did a hamper of everything dd would need to go swimming: cozzie, towel, swum nappies, some toys and some swim soap stuff, oh and a drawstring bag to take it all in

Bath toys (that your older child will use, but baby won't mind), something sentimental like first christmas ornament, books. Stockings - baby towel will bulk it out, or bibs etc.

Your older child won't notice difference in quantity of presents, so don't get bogged down equalising things.

My youngest slept through most present openings on Christmas (also 2 months at the time).

My DD was 3 weeks on her first Xmas, I got her nothing as it would of been a waste of money ...

Something pretty like a print for the nursery or keepsake? Just something for dc1 to unwrap really

Just wrap something that you would have got anyway - next size clothes, new blanket etc Doesn't even have to be new - at 5, DC1 won't notice.

All Practical stuff that you can pass off as presents! Definitely a baby's first Christmas bauble as they are lovely keepsakes

My first child was born at the end of October so I bought a Christmas outfit, some pjs, cloth book and a playmat. Oh and bibs.

One of thouse foot clay things photo frames. One side picture other side you put their footprint in the clay. You can picknup for a 10er

For the stocking, it doesn't need to be complicated. Wet wipes, dummies if you use them, a carton of milk if you use them, a pack of next size vests split up and individually wrapped, etc.

I've ordered a Christmas onesie, a first Christmas bauble, and I'll wrap up some of the baby grows we already have.

Would your existing DC be agreable to "donate" some of their old toys to the baby? That way you can wrap up extra toys without costing anything.

Choose wisely though. We've never done that but DS1 has happily let DS2 acquire certain toys but others are daily battles!

Just wrap up stuff you'll have bought anyway - nappies, wipes, bibs, clothes for 3-6m etc to bump up the pile if you're worried. I don't think an excitable 5yo is going to notice though really and the baby definitely won't!

I'm doing a stocking and then topping up his/her savings so we've spent the same on each. So far I have a wash bag (for when we go away, my 2 year old has one too), a bath mirror (£2 from Sainsbury's), a Christmas outfit and some sensory juggling bits of fabric (not sure what you call them!). Ds had a skwish, which was great. I'll also get him/her a money box. Not necessarily things they will use straight away, but useful all the same! X
