😩 what the hell do i get him? He much prefers to play Mario/minecraft on the wii u or iPad. He's not keen on Lego as he struggles to make it.

Mine was the same last year so I bought him a Hot Wires set and some fun games like Frustration and Operation as well as a really expensive kit to make a Roller Coaster, guess what? He's played with none of it all year! I have to entice him into them playing with me! This year I'm getting him a DS and an Army Survival kit because he loves Bear Grills.

Stocking fillers will be okay I think because I can fill it with sweets, Minecraft things and stuff like Silly Putty.

Also I gave in this year for DS's Birthday and bought him an X Box. Would that be any good as a main present?

How about stuff about basic coding? Learn the basics and build up to being able to create his own miinecraft stuff? Some great books out there and coding games. I'm getting ds1 a raspberry pi for Christmas and we are going to learn together.

I have a very similar sounding 7 year old, how about a stop motion annimation set. Creative but still with some tech to appeal to the gamer in him.

My son had Hot Wires last year at 8 and hasn't left it alone all year, he loves it. This year I've got a few ideas, he doesn't really play with toys anymore either so it's going to be something he can build like a K'nex rollercoaster, Lego Technic kit or a Haynes Engine builder. He also likes science, so I'm looking at some experiment kits too.

smEGG - I bought my son a Fischer technique Rolling Action kit last year. It's brilliant, a bit like a rollercoaster kit.

Omg that minecraft animation set looks good! I'm going to get him that, thank you.

He's been asking for an Xbox, I can't really afford it this year 😢

Thank you Shesastar I'll have a look at that.

drspouse · 12/10/2016 10:38

What about board/card games, some of those can be quite complex and he will be playing with another person at least?

happyscrappy · 12/10/2016 11:34

My DS sounds identical.. He's asked for an Apple Watch and an Xbox Hmm but can't afford either too this year! Is he into active stuff? I was thinking about a stunt scooter, or stunt kite or cheap version of the go pro for mine. He'll also be getting another box set of Pokemon comic books but beyond that I'm a bit stuck!

ShesAStar · 12/10/2016 11:54

Happyscrappy, what about Heeleys or a skateboard?

happyscrappy · 12/10/2016 14:44

Heeleys.. Good idea star!

OSETmum · 12/10/2016 15:26

DS (7) is the same but it's because he's always outdoors rather than playing techy stuff. He's getting a bigger bike (very specialised so £££ and so he'lol get less other stuff), an electronic drum kit, books, roller skates, Pokemon stuff etc.

Is he into clothes? DS is into skate/ bike brands in a big way so is getting some Vans trainers/ top/ hat.

And is he into toiletries etc? DS is getting some hair gel and lynx Envy (that's a sick face not a jealous face!).

Oh and he's getting some basic but real tools for his stocking such as a spirit level, tape measure and small screwdrivers for pottering about with.

Marking spot as my 8 year old is similar.

KingLooieCatz · 13/10/2016 13:20

Not mentioning stuff that's already been mentioned. For mine looking at:

walkie talkies (give him a bit more freedom to roam when camping)
Slippers, gloves, jumpers, PJ's
Art activity book
Art materials like oil pastels, proper watercolour paper, acrylic paint
Nice pencil/colouring pencil sets, possibly personalized
Novelty erasers
