Christmas Stockings! Where to buy and what kind?

DD will have just turned 2 this Christmas. Last year being a 1 we just did a gift bag with a couple of things in instead of a stocking as she mostly wanted to play with the bag. This year we would like to get a stocking but I've not seen one I've really liked.

Where did you buy your Christmas stockings? Did you buy a forever one or a temporary one? What material, size etc?

I've had the same Christmas stocking since I was 4! My godmother bought a personalised one with my name on and I refuse to throw it away. I will still be using if when I retire

Oh and it's the material of a Santa hat but the size of a small bin bag.

I used to have a big wool one. I wonder if my mum has it in the attic? I think it would be too big for DD though!

We're big on traditional handmade stockings in our family. DH has one I handknitted for him. DS and I have stunning hand stitched silk ones from my sister who's made them for most of the family.

If you sew then basic but beautiful stockings are very easy to make. The easy stocking tutorial from Diary of a Quilter is the one I use. With a sewing machine it only takes about 40 minutes to make a fully lined one

We got a really nice one from Matalan last year. I really love it! I also saw some nice ones in Home Bargains yesterday, of all places.

I also made one and v cack handed! Copied the patchwork one kirsty allsopp did - just used an existing stocking as template, cut out back, then two more for lining, and made final scrappy patchwork one for front , then sewed them all together with batting between front and liner. Looks amazing!

Damn you home makers! Not helping! I do t think my sewing is up to it not is my time tbh although I wish I could.

You can get some really nice knitted ones on amazon.

Etsy and folksy probably have some lovely ones as well.

I can knit but not well enough to make something I'd be happy with using year after year.

I really want to make myself a stocking now. Definitely going to look at that tutorial.

I know hobby craft has plain ones to embellish. I'm just not sure I have the brain capacity lol

Do you have a B&M bargains near you? They have some lovely and very cheap (but good quality) stockings usually. Worth a google!

We had lovely stripy knitted ones (red and white) from Muji. But DH ruined all that last year when he got carried away in Selfridges toy dept. and got the DC a personalised hessian sack each with red and white stripped lining. They are very nice but my family has always used stockings and I'm finding it hard to fill the sack. The DC love them though!

If you are going to be doing the stockings in the bedroom get two identical ones. Makes it much easier just to sneak in and swop them over!

Yeah I'm not sure about a sack but hadn't thought of muji!

What's B&M? I've not been in the area long so it's possible

Good idea with getting two. DH is like a night ninja (wouldn't guess it from looking at him) so he will be doing the dropping off if we do do it that way

When we had DD3 we got the whole family personalised ones from not on the high street. Costly but look brand new after five years of use.
