When should I open my big tin?

I have a tin that I bought last Feb/MArch time that I've been putting £1 and £2 coins in with a vague idea of saving up for Christmas.

It can only be opened with a tin opener.

What's the consensus on here of the best time to open it ?

I'd wait for the hideous "Black Friday" sales. Or maybe the day before to give time to count it all out and deposit into the bank ready to be spent.

I thought you meant a big tin of chocolates and I was actually disappointed to read it's money instead

I would open it a week before Black Friday, count it all, pay into the bank and spend a week deciding what you want to buy, then you'll be ready to snap it up if it's on sale

The day after Thanksgiving. This year it's 25th November.

I suggested a week before which is 18th November - less than 2 months away. You've waited this long already, why not wait a bit longer?

AnotherEmma I will have to go with your date of 18th November - I too would like to have a giant tin of chocolates to open on the same day sounds like a plan.

You could get an idea of how much is in there by weighing a pound coin and a similar tin, then weighing your money box. You'd get at least an idea of how much you might have.
Can you tell I also rattle presents under the tree? I have zero patience. I'd say crack it open now.

Well you're going to need a new empty tin to start saving for next year

I collect £2 tins in one of those tin-opener tins , I always make sure I have my new tin before I open the old one.

We do the end of Nov too, DH and I have a shopping trip together on the last Friday in Nov.
In previous years we've cashed it up, divided by the 4 of us and taken the DC out. The Rule of the £2 Jar is it must be spent.

Dare I ask how much your tin added up to in other years?

Our best so far was £280 (before that £200-£240) but this year there aren't so many £2 coins (I blame DH and his Touch Card, I use my debit card mainly too)

I've just weighed ours - minus 100g for the tin and each £2 coin is 12g, should have £178 so far , still got 2 months till Tin-Day

Now, need to decide what Big Tin of Chocolates to go with the grand opening a counting ...[!

Not too shabby eh? That sounds like a good amount for a shopping trip.

I'm going to be super excited when it comes to opening the tin here. Can't do the weighing thing, as we've also been shoving in the odd 10p and 5p bits and on the odd occasion a 5 pound note.

I've just been reading the thread about how rubbish all the tins of chocs are now - decisions, decisions - one of them Must be all right.

I thought a big tin of chocolates as well and have mentally added one ok, a couple to my shopping list to make sure I have plenty of munchies for Christmas this year.

I love Roses but I'm saddened by how much they've declined in quality of late. I've encountered a weird mixture of chocolates in different style wrappers, as if they had some leftovers from the old packaging to use up with the new. Also chocolate eclairs in there, which don't belong with Roses at all! Bizarre.
