where are you storing the turkey?

We have this pathetic, titchy little fridge, and I don't know where to keep the turkey when we get one. And I don't know when best to get one.

Are you leaving it out of the fridge? Is this OK to do with a bog-standard supermarket turkey, or does it have to be one you knew personally in life that has only been killed yesterday?

I don't know whether to leave it unti the last minute to get one, risking trauma to my kids if I can't get one, orbuy one now and fret about where to store the damn thing for three days

Or buy frozen and let it slowly thaw? Sounds like a salmonella recipe ...

Help?

Have you got a grden you can keep it in. We did think about that but realised we didn't have a box that small animals couldn't nibble through.

I bought a fresh one form M&S but it is taking up half of the fridge!

Ours is still with the delivery company - will come on Sunday morning.

One of our neighbours is away for Xmas, and we have got permission to use her (two, small) fridges for storage.

I do have a back garden. I'd need to think about something to keep it in there, though, as you said, that small animals couldn't get through. I guess the weather will be cold enough for the next few days ..

I'd take out everything that doesn't absolutely have to be in the fridge (jam, cheese, veg, booze, juice etc) and give the raw meat priority.

But that's just me.

Mine will be soaking in Nigella's brining recipe in a bucket in the (cold) utility room. In laws are collecting it from the farm tomorrow and bringing it around. Might put it in the fridge til midday Sunday and then do the business with it.

TinsellyRhino · 22/12/2006 16:26

ours is still in the shop

SaggarClaus · 22/12/2006 16:26

Mine will go in the garage - it's colder in there than in my over laden fridge anyway.

Ilovestnicholas · 22/12/2006 16:27

Garage or car boot.

JodieG1 · 22/12/2006 16:44

We're picking ours up from the farm tomorrow and it'll sit on the utility draining board until Christmas morning when it'll be stuffed. Has to be at room temperature (as well as the stuffing) so that it cooks properly.

joanna4 · 22/12/2006 16:50

Mine always goes on the garage floor on a meat dish.

JackieNoHoHo · 22/12/2006 17:10

Car boot's a good thought. Inspired! Thanks for that . Was going to clear stuff out of the fridge to fit it in, but like this option better.

MistletoeGolightly · 22/12/2006 17:27

I'm leaving mine on the back step. According to the car thermometer it is currently 0.5 degrees out there, considerably colder than my fridge! You only need to keep it below 5 degrees so as long as the weather stays cold....

Ours has just gone in the shed - it's about 5 degrees outside now and going down tonight apparently so colder than the fridge

LIZS · 23/12/2006 16:24

ooh was just going to ask same question . Ours is hanging in garage atm !
