Having an alto voice makes me sad at Christmas!

I know this is a ridiculous thing to be sad about, but carols are pretty much my favourite thing about Christmas. I love playing them on the piano, but I love singing them too. But when I go to a carol service, I find it really hard to sing along! They are at a great pitch for most of the men there who can sing nice and loud, but to sing an octave higher with most of the women is just too high for me

I need to join a choir I think.

I'm a soprano and got the lead with my musical society for next years show! I'm very excited!! I feel for you OP as I always say I am a soprano as they 99 times out of 100 get the tune! I'm rubbish if we have to do a harmony, I inwardly sulk and shoot daggers at the altos who all giggle at me (lighthearted)! Join a choir, not just because you could learn the harmonies and it will indeed sound beautiful, but because you clearly love to sing! Have a wonderful Xmas fellow singers!! and OP you tube the alto's lament! It's very funny and I'm sure you will be able to relate!!

Great thread. I joined a choir for the first time this year and started off as an alto, quickly shifted over to sopranos though when I realised they have the melody! I have quite a large range and it definitely improved with choir practice.
Next year I may well learn the alto parts.

I have had to learn lots of weird and wonderful alto harmony lines for various Christmas Concerts, but get embarrassed to sing them at general carol singing events, so just sing the tune in a mousy head voice!

I'm an alto and I love singing the alto or bass line to carols and hymns. I have sungnin choirs for years so I'm pretty good at picking out the alto line or making something up.
