I'd like to buy some games for Christmas, please share your family favourites

We love Settlers of Catan, it's easy enough to learn but has great re-playability as you can rearrange the board into different layouts each time.

Only drawback is you need 3-4 players (in my family there is often only 2 who want to play), but it's a great game, and play lasts about 45 minutes - hour which is a nice length I think.

Great, thanks, 6 of us so 3 players shouldn't be a problem.

Settlers is indeed brilliant!

There is another thread going on here if you want more recommendations, but I would definitely recommend Settlers. If you're fairly new to the more strategy-type games (as opposed to stuff like Monopoly, Cluedo etc) it is a good 'gateway' game IYSWIM. Seems complicated when you read the instructions but once you know it it's easy. :)
