We are tryong to decide on a tree topper, last year we used dd1's school made Angel, and I can't remember what we did previously. We also have in our decorations box a star and a shop bought angel (by my dad) which neither dp or I particularly like.

We're due to put the Tree up on Thursday. Dd1 has requested we use the star but I think it should be an Angel really. Just wondering what othsr people have. Also what happens when dc make toppers in school? Do they get priority for that year? What happens if both dc make a topper?

A dove. Called Robin - not ironically, but after a baby who was born around the time we got it, and named by 2 yo DS (the dove, not the baby).

My DM has the fairy that her DM had as a child! Mary the Fairy must be nearly 100 by now.

gabsdot45 · 05/12/2015 20:38

My kid's are adopted from Russia so we have Snedgruchka ( so) on the top of our tree. She is the snow maiden, granddaughter of Dez moroz, grandfather frost and she helps him deliver presents to the boys and girls.

LittleMissGreen · 05/12/2015 21:54

I have a star right at the top, under which are my nativity characters including an angel.

TiggyD · 05/12/2015 22:00

A snowflake. It was going to be a star, but when I put it on the top of the tree bent right over. The snowflake that was in the multipack decoration box was lighter.

TiggyD · 05/12/2015 22:01

I'll think of it as a 'special snowflake'.

weebarra · 05/12/2015 22:03

A paper Lola from a CBeebies magazine when DS1 (now 8) was about three. She really needs to be retired.

steppemum · 05/12/2015 22:08

gabs - It is Dyed Maroz, and snegorichka. (at least that is the closest I can get it in English). Maroz means frozen and Dyedushka is grandfather, so dyed is short for that.
(it may be officially spelt moroz, I can't remember but with 2 o's the forst sounds like an a)
Sneg is the word for snow and so snegorichka means the little snowy one (sort of)

I wish we had one. We have a few lovely painted wooden ornaments from Russia, but no snegorichka.

I have a ds and 2 dds, there was a yearly debate over angle or star, until ds went off and made a special star, complete with attachment bit so that it would always be on top of the tree! 8 years later it is still going strong, great tactical manoeuver on his part!

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeG0es · 05/12/2015 22:12

Always a star but we've got several different ones. My favourite is a deep blue and gold coloured wire one. The DCs favour a big plastic one that looks more like a comet.

steppemum · 05/12/2015 22:13

sorry, gabs realised that isn't clear in English, it looks like the word dye, but you don't say it like that
you pronounce it 'yed' with a 'd' on the front

I have a silver angel, where I first worked there was a jewellery shop (costume/fashion stuff, not tiffany!) across the road that was closing down and she had a couple of them in the window, I asked how much they were and she said she wasn't really selling them, I must have looked sad, cos she said she would let me have one if I promised to look after her. (the angel , not the shop lady)

so the angel was wrapped it up for me and she gets to sit on the tree every year!!

and I have just realised she'll be 31 this year ! he lives in a Christmas tin with the fancy John Lewis glass baubles I bought during the first Christmases that dh and I were together.

We have a little fuzzy snowman. It was the only thing we could find that was light enough not to make the tree bend and fall off. We used to have a snowflake on our fake tree. This snowman is ok but not great because he is white with a gold scarf and black hat and all our decorations are blue and silver.

LexLoofah · 07/12/2015 08:31

nothing, tried lots of things over the years, nothing stays on straight so decided it looks better bare than with something wonky on it and the top of the tree is quite beautiful if a real one so no need to hide it

Heavenscent86 · 07/12/2015 12:01

Santa Claus but I think he's had a few too many this year as he's leaning a bit lol.

OddBoots · 07/12/2015 13:06

The knitted (crocheted) character from Harry Hill's TV Burp - that's what the children wanted a few years back and it has become traditional.

My choice is a lovely, abstract, matt effect pale gold angel musician, which I chose when I first lived on my own and felt very grown-up, selecting a colour scheme and carefully choosing lovely, lovely things to decorate my own tree.

Fast forward many years, to the first time OH and I are putting up a tree in our new, now joint home. He largely lets me get on with the colour scheme etc. but produces a very old, battered and frankly not-that great-looking-when-she-started-obviously-very-many-years-ago angel and clearly wants her to have pride of place at the top of the otherwise exquisitely (though i say so myself) decorated tree.

Reader, I hesitated, my first thought was that if i had known that living together meant putting up tat for decorations, I would not have bothered going through the upheaval of moving house. My next thought was that i was not getting any younger myself and it may not be a bad thing, to encourage his propensity to cherish things as they get older and more battered looking. She has presided over our tree ever since. The angel is now one of a set of four musicians who are positioned just below the top of the tree, looking exquisitely lovely.

Very glad to report that, so far, I too have been cherished.

An angel - she likes to come out for the festive season!

Lovelydiscusfish · 07/12/2015 20:18

A fairly abstract angel - can't describe exactly what she looks like, maybe white and gold stained glass? I bought her from a church fair trade sale years ago (she is an ethical angel!), when I had just moved in with the bloke who is now my ex-h. She cost a lot of money relative to what I had at the time - about £6 or something probably. I remember thinking it was loads to spend on a decoration, but she is very classy!
When I was a child, db and I always argued over star and angel (the star was a tinsel wrapped wire one, the angel had an orange feather dress and a slightly melted plastic face). My mom used to alternate each year - one year the angel was on too of the star, and the next it hung just below it.

dementedpixie · 07/12/2015 20:28

This is my new light up star from tesco. It was only £5 down from £10. Quite pleased with it Star

Generally I go for a big bow. This years bow will be hessian and silver.

I've looked for a star topper for a few years but haven't seen one I really love. The search continues...

Whoami24601 · 07/12/2015 20:49

We have jack too Grin I bought him for DH when he was still DP and he's topped our tree ever since!

ShamefulPlaceMarker · 07/12/2015 20:51

We used to use a santa hat, but I made a snowman a couple years ago out of ds' newborn cardy :)

ShamefulPlaceMarker · 07/12/2015 20:53

I have made ds a crochet jack bauble :)

FankEweVeryMuch · 07/12/2015 21:41

A wooden star I bought the first year I lived with my H.
