What is this Elf thing?

I'm baffled by references to an Elf on a shelf. I didn't have one when I was growin up the 60s and 70s.

I didn't have one for my DCs. Have I missed out? Have I failed my DCs by not having one? I just haven't got a clue. Please enlighten me.

Elf is just a way of building anticipation for Christmas for your children.

What is intensely irritating is the Facebook posts every fucking day showing the various Elf positions.

Unbelievable twattish behaviour and it's only day 6- aside from the fact most elves are the most sinister looking creatures ever- aside from your own children, none gives a shit where your elf is today.
