I reckon not, think it is an American thing.

NotQuiteCockney · 11/12/2006 21:37

Arse, it's a nice one, I have fond memories of it from when I was in a choir. The tempo is funny and dramatic.

I know it but don't know how I know it. Certainly didn't learn it in school or at church in my youth.
Think its lovely though.

Mercy · 11/12/2006 21:38

I've never heard of it either NQC

Presumably you get it where you are now, though, right?

My actual favourite favourite carol is the Huron Carol, which is of course only a Canadian thing, but at least in this case I know why. (It's a fake Native carol, made to help convert them.)

There's a really nice jazzy instrumental version in the Xmas Studio 60. Beautiful.

Just found this,"O holy night" is said to be the first music ever broadcast over a radio.
Have a listen-

I love it! We learned it in school - I now wonder where the teacher got it from.

We sang a verse in French too; I always vaguely thought it was French.

SherlockLGJ · 11/12/2006 22:17

I know it....................

I love it.................

I abosorbed it via Perry Como.....

fruitcake · 11/12/2006 22:18

Didn't Bing Crosby or Nat King Cole or one of those guys sing that? I'm sure we've got it somewhere.

BudaBauble · 11/12/2006 22:19

We did it at a Catholic girls's school in Dublin in late 70s.

JackieNoHoHo · 11/12/2006 22:20

SherlockLGJ - did you have the Perry Como Christmas LP too? Wonderfully OTT stuff.

itschrismurftime · 11/12/2006 22:20

I love this song, have only ever heard it sung by American singers.

roisin · 11/12/2006 22:20

Bleurgghhh! I hate it! It's so corny.
Yuck yuck yuck

Sorry, but it's one of those things that pops up all the time, and people who should know far better seem to love it.

It's disgusting

NotQuiteCockney · 11/12/2006 22:22

You're right, welliemum, it's originally French (I now learn).

Lol my husband and I had this discussion just this morning. Its my favorite carol but he had never heard it.

roisin · 11/12/2006 22:34

I'm shocked at how many people actually like this!

SherlockLGJ · 11/12/2006 22:37

Jackie O

White cover......

Have recently bought a Perry Como on CD.

Along with Christmas Crooners, and Mario Lanza.

Oh happy days.

paulaplumpbottom · 11/12/2006 22:37

Why its really beautiful and moving?

SherlockLGJ · 11/12/2006 22:40

PPB

I really like it, no doubt it is the fruit shoots of the musical world. Albeit lacking the same logic as to why it is.................

fruitcake · 11/12/2006 22:53

I love it. It's beautiful. and all those corny, syrupy Christmas crooners, too. how about The Christmas Song? "Chestnuts roasting on an open fire/Jack Frost nipping at your... balls" as dh says.

mears · 11/12/2006 22:55

One of my favourites. Celine Dion sings a lovely version.

paulaplumpbottom · 11/12/2006 22:57

Nobody sings it like Nat King Cole though

MariNativityPlay · 11/12/2006 22:59

Roisin, I'll back you on this. Doesn't hit the spot for me either...
