tamum, how weird. Yes, that's it. I have a lovely version of it at home, sung by a Canadian pop group. Why on earth were you guys singing a missionary song for Native people?

it's my fave too, my daughters choir sing it each year, very emotional.

It's my favorite carol. I have even told my dh I want it sang at my funeral!!!! How morbid! It is so so beautiful. We sang it in school choir with all the beautiful harmonies - incredible. Again this was in Ireland in the early 80s.

I wasn't familiar with it as a child, but it was performed beautifully by my son's school choir at the Christmas concert on Tues

tiredemma · 18/12/2006 09:24

you can sing along to it here...

holy night

makes me feel all teary.

NQC, it does seem a bit weird when you put it like that. It never even occurred to me at the time that it was odd that Huron Indians would have carols.... I am pretty sure it was in the BBC Radio series they did for schools called "Singing Together"- I've actually just googled and it seems I am right . I guess they chose it because it's such a nice simple tune (easy for recorders) and rhythm. Beautiful though.

yes

im about as english as you can get (though my great16 - great22 grandparents on 1 of the tinybranches by then were from france i can go back to england on EVERY branch of my family tree for several generations all in england... (and aprt from those above only in england)

we sing it... i love the song.... and just last weekend if you were a fly on the wall in my mums kitchen you would have haerd, me, my sis, my mum and my grandmother all singing it at the top of our voices

It's underrated and under-used. It's beautiful, haunting and uplifting all in one. Aled Jones does a lovely version with a choir.
For all you Josh Groban fans (me included) he does a beautiful version of 'Jesu Joy of Man's Desiring' with Lili Haydn.

TheChristmasArmadillo · 18/12/2006 23:41

I love it.

I can't believe anyone can listen to it without at least damp eyes and a lump in the throat.

BEautiful song.

serenitynightholynight · 19/12/2006 00:09

We used to sing the Huron Carol at school too. In fact we once went up to Capital Radio and had it recorded there to be played over the christmas period (I think they still get primary schools to do this each year) I never knew what it was called before, DH always thought I was a bit weird when I tried to sing it to him, lol.

You've made my day by posting the lyrics. I heard a young Gospel Singer in Boulder at the beginning of December sing this and yes it brought a tear to my eye. Might be typically American (Bing Crosby did a version). However, my Grandfather who was a beautiful baritone sang it and always made everyone cry. Happy happy memories. Thank you so much NQC.

alibauble · 19/12/2006 00:52

Oh and the name of the young gospel singer - Lyndon Carriger - stunning stunning voice.

NotQuiteCockney · 19/12/2006 07:00

I could probably whip up an mp3 of the very nice Huron carol I have on CD to email to anyone interested.

Glad to hear everyone's enjoying Oh Holy Night!
