He's a good reader but I'm looking for something engaging and not dry!

There is a WW2 one, The book thief, it covers communism.

You can get the whole series of Alex Rider (reluctant teenage spy) books for £15 in the works at the moment. Think they may be aimed at slightly younger teens but I still love them at the ripe old age of 28 :)

The CHERUB series are aimed at slightly older teens and are again about teenage spys. The same author also wrote the Henderson Boys which I haven't read but I think they are about teenage spys used during WW2
