I've read loads of stuff online but I still don't get it. We are going to get the kids an xbox for Christmas but I don't know which one to get. They will want to play with their friends, most of whom have a 360 but some have a One - am I right that a 360 can only play with a 360? (Is there some clever gaget that lets 360 owners playing with One Owners?)

Also, what would they need to play with friends - I've read all sorts of gubbins about playing online (eg. Xbox Live? WTF is that?) and I'm none the wiser.

I'd rather get a 360, just because it's cheaper - but would this be a mistake? Is a One loads better?

And what about Kinect - this is just an add-on that you don't NEED, only if you WANT, is that right?!

Look at GAME, Cex or amazon. All cheaper than £100 preowned. GAME have 12 months guarantee on preowned stuff I believe.

caroldecker · 18/11/2015 18:33

£75 and 12 month quality guarantee

LucasNorthsTwiglets · 18/11/2015 22:35

Brilliant, thanks so much for that, MrsF and Carol! I was going to pop into Game in town so that's great tha tthey come with a warranty!

thank you Lucas for starting the thread, I'd been in exactly the same dilemma. DS will be v happy when he gets an x box after all because at £75 we can do it (I'd been looking at £200+ ones in Tesco and the like).

gamerchick · 19/11/2015 08:53

CEX are doing 24 month warranty if that's any use to anyone.

LucasNorthsTwiglets · 21/11/2015 13:22

Yesterday DH got a 360 from CEX - 2 year warranty, £82. Thanks so much to everyone here for your help, especially for the tip about the 2 year warranty from CEX :)

OP, did your DH go instore or order it online? Did it come with controllers? My DS wants exactly the same, but Game online seem to be sold out of 360 consoles. Like you, I have no idea what I'm doing Grin. Just want to get it bought now.

LucasNorthsTwiglets · 21/11/2015 15:40

He got it instore, Kitty. Yes it came with a controller (he's not sure whether it's one or two). Game had none instore but they were showing them online yesterday...

Does anyone know when the 360 will effectively die?!?! How long until Live Gold ends? Kids have a PS4, but have been stalking in buying a One. Thanks!

gamerchick · 21/11/2015 19:01

Well it won't die, I still use my original Xbox but it won't be supported by the end of next year.

Live gold doesn't run out, accounts can be moved machine to machine as usual.

OliviaDunham · 21/11/2015 19:53

But will there come a time when LG isn't supported on 360? (Obviously my DSs lives will end if this happens!!)

gamerchick · 21/11/2015 20:13

Well all live gold means really is playing online, you won't be able to play online when they bin the servers. Which they will be doing at some point next year.

gamerchick · 21/11/2015 20:14

But you still need live gold for the one.. In fact it's a stroppy bugger without it.

OliviaDunham · 21/11/2015 20:42

Yeah I realise that, but their lives revolve around playing online with their friends. Will they really stop this next year when they are only stopping selling them next year?

starlight2007 · 21/11/2015 21:00

I did a thread on this a few weeks ago and got my Ds an Xbox360 from Game..

I bought pre owned because I don't expect it to last forever.. however I know he will be delighted

AnnaMarie27 · 22/11/2015 08:13

Hi I'm new to Mumsnet and came a cross this thread I was worried when I saw someone said they are cutting it off as my son loves his, so I contacted Microsoft and they told me it was all rumours and they are not going to cut it off anytime soon so I'm confused?

AnnaMarie27 · 22/11/2015 08:35

They also said that they have no plans to discontinuing the service on the Xbox 360.

SoftKittyWarmKitty · 22/11/2015 09:35

I've also heard it it could be years before they cut off the Xbox 360. Bit of a moot point for me anyway, as the Xbox One is way out of my budget Grin.

OP, is the one your DH bought in good condition? I know Game refurbish them first (whatever that means) but I'm not sure if CEX do.

OliviaDunham · 22/11/2015 14:45

SoftKitty my DSis bought one in CEX last year and has had no problems at all. It was all in original packaging and they did her a deal with a couple games.

LucasNorthsTwiglets · 23/11/2015 14:34

We haven't actually tried it yet, Kitty - that's worrying me now, better get him onto that :)

Microsoft stated when the xbox one came out that they would be supporting the xbox 360 until 2016. I, personally, took that to mean that they would stop making games and giving tech support at that time. Not that they would remove the xbox live facility. As far as I'm aware, they haven't given any date or confirmation that they will shut the servers down. The original Xbox had online functionality for quite a while after the 360 came out.

GrimmauldPlace · 23/11/2015 16:40

There's an article from 2013 here that explains where all the rumours and speculation came from. They should probably clarify things as we edge closer to 2016!

ICanSeeForMiles · 23/11/2015 16:46

We're in 2 minds whether to upgrade to the One this year, ds is 7 and only plays minecraft and sonic (along with the new skylanders superchargers on his list) anyone know if the one supports these games? I don't have a clue.
