Christmas and "tipping"

Right..I told dh that I would like to tip people who offer us a service throughout the year iykwim.
My list was the : window cleaner and the paper lad and............the post man. The postman imo is brill and is such a lovely guy. He knows how hard it can be having a toddler and being pregnant so when I have parcels delivered and noone is around he leaves them somewhere where I can find them once home. Yeah sure he shouldn't do it BUT imo its a great help and saves me the hassle of a busy post/sorting office to collect it iykwim.

DH was fine about tips for the window cleaner and paper boy but feels the post man is maybe not an ideal person to tip as he is probably on more than the paper boy and window cleaner..and may be offended..? different views to me..!! Can't you tell who goes out and works in this relationship..and feels sorry for the people out there working in all weathers etc.

What do others do..? DH suggested prehaps give him a bottle of wine etc..? But then he has to carry it for the rest of his round.?

views and opinions please. x

postman might have to officially declare it?

we even have to give in a box of chocolates - not allowed to accept gift - miserable fuckers

SHHHHsantaiscoming · 07/12/2006 14:59

never thought of that..I remember where I worked before having dd, we got gifts from car dealers ie Mercedes would send us champagne or motorised cars for those with kids etc.

Once we were bought out by a large high street bank all these gifts that arrived somehow ended up being put away and being raffled off at christmas time...BTW we had to buy the tickets !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

What do you suggest custardo..?

I always tip our postman, because he has to come through key-coded gates, and I think it's a way of thanking him for his extra effort. Your postman seems to help, so I would acknowledge that with a tip.

I used to leave a tip for the binmen, until they started leaving the odd bag of extra rubbish!

SHHHHsantaiscoming · 07/12/2006 15:42

think I will. Thanks for clearing my mind..!!

A tip for the bin men..??!! No chance here..!! They leave more mess than whats in the bins and NEVER take any bags that are left by the bin or even if the bin lid is open slightly..

Thats our council for you..!!

I never tip the postman - we never seem to get the same one twice on our route

Do tip the binmen though as they're lovely and always wave to ds2/flash the headlights on the lorry at him as he's OBSESSED with the rubbish lorry and stands on the windowsill with his nose pressed against the glass every Friday

SHHHHsantaiscoming · 07/12/2006 16:06

bless your ds .

His older brother was exactly the same, so they've been waving weekly for about 3 years now - they deserve the Christmas tip

TerrbileTwos · 07/12/2006 16:39

your DS sounds like mine. totally obsessed with BinBorry as he calls it. even to the point of making me drive down the road following one when he spots it if we are out and about. The driver and the guys always amke a point of waving at him or making faces and alsways stop the van in front of the window so he has the best view into the back of it. Great guys (apart from the mess they leave behind)

SHHHHsantaiscoming · 07/12/2006 19:18

suppose I have all this to come..maybe not with dd but with ds2b who is due end of jan..!!!
Personally bin lorries do nowt for me .

Oh well, if ds2b does go that route, then I can recommend the Playmobil recycling lorry. Best. Toy. Ever

I know a postman and discussed Christmas tips with him a few years ago. His view was that not many people do it now but those who do are much appreciated. My dad has always done it for his postman (and possibly also the binmen) and I meant to do it last year but didn't see him. I intend to do it this year and used to give to our paper boy too but we don't have one now.

smoggie · 07/12/2006 19:39

I leave Christmas tips for the milkman, binman and postie. I know they really appreciate it. WOn't be giving the window cleaners one though as they seem to change every month and don't even do a partic good job!

JollyOldSaintNikkielas · 07/12/2006 20:26

I tip the paper boy but thats it,bin men are crap, our post people change a lot and i never see the milk man as my Mam pays!

santasaltire · 07/12/2006 20:31

I always give our postie a bottle of wine or chocs. He is lovely, a young man, knows and laughs at the chaos in my house every morning with my Dses, mindees and dogs. He always leaves parecels hidden if he knows i'm just going to school and coming straight back.
our window cleaners are away with a 6 pack of beer, and the wheelie bin cleaning man will be getting similar.
As for the bin men, well they can feck off. Don't get me started on Fife f*in council binmen

worcestercaroline · 07/12/2006 21:36

postman, bin men and milkman. mind u may not do postman this yr as he keeps delivering other peoples post to our house so I then have to go and post it to the right house!!

fairyjay · 08/12/2006 17:07

worcestercaroline -

paulaplumpbottom · 08/12/2006 17:23
