I was thinking for 8yr old girls & boys ..any thoughts or past experience?are they a gimmic?

Yes they are good... But... Also a bit of a gimmick at least for DS. He doesn't wear it everyday but does rediscover it regularly and have fun with it. I'd say get one but try to get a decent offer.

My 6 yr old got his last Christmas - it was a bit hit and miss, and I think it's too basic for him now. It depends what your 6 yr old can do - if he is apt at minecraft, I wouldn't bother getting him this. If he is not into tech that much - he will probably love it.

My daughter got hers at 7 and loved it to bits. Good point from PP, which hadn't occurred to me, actually - as she's got more into 'proper' computer games she's played with it less and less often.
