Christmas morning breakfast

This might sound utterly bonkers but when I was growing up we always had pork pie, cold meats and pickle for breakfast on Christmas morning. I always wondered where this tradition came from as no one else I knew apart from my family did it. My mum was from Newcastle and my dad from Warwickshire and I never knew which one brought/continued this tradition (I'm assuming it's what one of them grew up with).

When I worked in Leicester for a while I met one other person who had pork pie for Christmas Day breakfast but everyone else has always looked at me like I'm bonkers!

So in a nut shell does anyone else have this breakfast on the big day or ever heard of others having it?

I love the fruit Christmas tree!

blibblobblub · 11/10/2015 08:09

Wow! That's impressive!

Pixi2 · 11/10/2015 08:18

It's the only time the DC are allowed Frosties. They have more than one bowl.
We also have panettone, bacon, eggs, and whatever else I fancy since I am the one who makes it.

Growing up it was the only morning we could have chocolate for breakfast.

Xanadu46 · 11/10/2015 08:19

Sounds lovely, think i might be trying that this year . We usually have bagels and bucks fizz

MillieMoodle · 11/10/2015 08:29

Yes we always had pork pie for breakfast on Christmas morning! And picked onions, walnuts, bread and butter. I've not read the full thread but had to comment as I've never met anyone else who does!

I'm originally from a part of the West Midlands which used to be Warwickshire, before they changed county boundaries. My mum's family always had it, her mother was from North Wales and her father was from Coventry so maybe it is a Warwickshire thing?!

DH doesn't like pork pie but I still always have it for breakfast on Christmas morning if we're at home. It's one of my favourite Christmas traditions Grin

The tree takes two minutes to make.
My kids are at the right age to be chocolate mad now so it's way of getting something half decent into them.

Xenadog · 11/10/2015 22:08

Millie it's Coventry where I grew up so maybe it's a Coventry thing? I still never met anyone else who had pork pie though!

That fruit tree looks amazing, and much more effort required than 2 mins!

Impressive Wonka

Get a carrot.
Stick Cocktail sticks all over it.
Shove fruit on the cocktail sticks
Balance more fruit between the gaps.

Ps got the idea from pinterest. Think I looked up Christmas snacks. There is a veg version too

Maybe it is a Coventry thing, will ask my DM where she thinks it came from. I always just thought it was one of those weird family things Grin

Pork pie for Christmas breakfast is a Midlands thing. We have scrambled eggs with bagels and smoked salmon (parma ham for none fish eating DS) but pork pie is tempting.

MarkRuffaloCrumble · 13/10/2015 08:50

ooh pretty! I'm so doing that this year (before toddling off to McDs).

NeverNic · 13/10/2015 09:07

Growing up it was either a boiled egg or scrambled eggs, salmon or gammon with a choice of sourdough bread or bagels. We also always had croissants. It was the law! Breakfast was a big deal and kept us going for a late lunch.

With my children it's an egg of their choice and Christmas crumpets.

carbcraver · 13/10/2015 13:48

not a fan of pork pies...
we have croissants with bacon and cheese. and bucks fizz.

like the continental meats and cheese idea, will suggest to DP Xmas Smile

BathshebaDarkstone · 13/10/2015 13:52

We have whatever the DC choose.

BathshebaDarkstone · 13/10/2015 13:55

Xmas Smile testing

BathshebaDarkstone · 13/10/2015 13:56

Hooray, it works! Xmas GrinXmas Blush

Xenadog · 13/10/2015 13:59

Ah Skipped that makes sense to me as the only person other than my family who had pork pie was a man I worked with who was Leiceester born and bred.

DS would scoff the fruit Christmas tree, DD might eat some apple. Xmas Hmm

Hooleywhipper · 13/10/2015 14:54

We always do this and nice to read here that others have heard of it. Dickinson and Morris Melton Mowbray mail order is a must for our breakfast pork pie .

Wilhamenawonka · 13/10/2015 15:57

How about a quartet of trees

  1. Fruit
  2. Veg
  3. Chocolate truffles
  4. Pork pies

If we lasso some bagels over them that should cover everyone

MrsDeathOfRats · 13/10/2015 16:18

Never heard of it!

We do panettone and stollen and Madeleine's here! With proper coffee and warm milk for DC.
God I love Christmas!
And this year dd wants to bake the Madeleine's with me instead of buying them, yay!

EastMidsMummy · 13/10/2015 23:29

Nothing extravagant (a piece of toast) or maybe nothing at all. We're going to be overindulging over Christmas, but start with a big breakfast - cooked or pork pie - and I'd struggle by lunchtime.

Xenadog · 14/10/2015 14:01

DP has just made a load of piccalilli so we're going to be having that with our pork pie Christmas morning. Xmas Smile
