Christmas morning breakfast

This might sound utterly bonkers but when I was growing up we always had pork pie, cold meats and pickle for breakfast on Christmas morning. I always wondered where this tradition came from as no one else I knew apart from my family did it. My mum was from Newcastle and my dad from Warwickshire and I never knew which one brought/continued this tradition (I'm assuming it's what one of them grew up with).

When I worked in Leicester for a while I met one other person who had pork pie for Christmas Day breakfast but everyone else has always looked at me like I'm bonkers!

So in a nut shell does anyone else have this breakfast on the big day or ever heard of others having it?

Croissants, champagne and chocolate here. It's Christmas Day so anything goes in this house.

NarcyCow · 10/10/2015 10:38

Another vote for bacon sandwiches and chocolate orange (because I always have one in my stocking).

Pressies get opened while the bacon's in the oven and also while we eat it because it takes us most of the morning.

Buck's fizz or something along those lines will feature too.

Nicknamegrief · 10/10/2015 10:49

Smoked salmon, bagels and maybe scrambled egg.

notenoughbottle · 10/10/2015 11:06

We normally have bacon sarnies but with this being my first Xmas on my own with kids for a few years I imagine it'll be a mix of croissants, pastries and chocolate hehe

Verypissedoffwife · 10/10/2015 11:09

Pork pies are for any day or any meal. I really really like pork pies Grin

IamSantaClaus · 10/10/2015 11:15

Bacon sandwiches here , or coco pops . I have never had a pork pie nor has dh as far as I'm aware so for us it would be very odd to introduce them on Christmas morning . I'd quite like to see dhs face though

Savagebeauty · 10/10/2015 11:17

I love pork pies Smile
We don't have lunch till about 4 so have bacon sarnies.

FattyNinjaOwl · 10/10/2015 11:18

We just scoff chocolate. The DCs can have cereal/toast too if they really want, but let's be honest, no child will pick that over chocolate Xmas Wink

Cirsium · 10/10/2015 11:19

Ham sandwiches (from a ham joint cooked overnight) when I was a child. Orange and Cranberry muffins for the last few years since I have been with DH and wanted to start our own traditions.

Wilhamenawonka · 10/10/2015 11:28

No traditions here yet but last year we had waffles and toppings and a Christmas tree made out of fruit which went down very well and felt special

howtorebuild · 10/10/2015 11:33

Never heard if it, if you like it do it. Croissant here.

boobubsmum · 10/10/2015 11:35

At my parents it's cereal, toast jam type stuff because the kitchen is already in full swing by the time everyone surfaces hungover for breakfast.

At my in-laws they have bagels with smoked salmon and I have bacon.

Pork pie sounds amazing though! makes mental note to pick some up

ChinaSorrows · 10/10/2015 11:40

Growing up it was bacon sarnies whilst sat on my parent's bed opening stockings and eating smarties.

DH and I have a smoked salmon with scrambled egg and naice bread tradition. With champagne. Xmas Grin

If I suggested pork pie with meats and pickle he would be elated!

MTWTFSS · 10/10/2015 12:09

Extra large luxury croissants filled to the brim with Nutella Grin

NarcyCow · 10/10/2015 12:23

Ooh, MTWTFSS, I'll have to get some Nutella for the kids, they'd love that. I'll get the little plastic individual ones and put them in their stockings Grin

Xenadog · 10/10/2015 12:48

We are definitely going to keep the pork pie tradition going. Now to find THE best pork pie. I think this will require regular taste testing between now and the big day to make sure we get it right. Wink

Not quite poem pie, very nice though.www.bbc.co.uk/food/recipes/raised_chicken_and_ham_63537

DontStopBelievin · 10/10/2015 21:58

Never heard of it, but sounds like a damn fine tradition to me!

MustBeLoopy390 · 10/10/2015 22:03

We have gammon, fried eggs and toast with Buck's Fizz/fresh orange and lemonade, apparently MIL's ddad always requested it and it became a tradition.

Notso · 10/10/2015 22:12

I've never tried pork pie.

Christmas breakfast for us is bacon sandwiches, usually interrupted by PIL calling round.
When I was little it was chocolate and mince pies.
DH wants eggs benedict this year though book

DontStopBelievin · 10/10/2015 22:18

Already posted saying never heard of it, but sounds damn fine. (As love pork pie and pickles.)
A traditional breakfast here though would be smoked salmon on either toast or bagels.
Kids can have this too, but they're usually not bothered and would much prefer cereal and toast followed mid morning by something out of their selection box Grin

icclemunchy · 10/10/2015 22:22

We have Erm McDonald's breakfast. We open prezzies then nip through the drive though on the way to sort the ponies out

CarolynW1980 · 10/10/2015 22:31

We have Ikea Kanelbullar cinnamon buns and I have a glass of bucks fizz too. Love it!

MarkRuffaloCrumble · 10/10/2015 23:06

Wilhamena, do you have a photo of your fruit tree? Sounds lovely!

But then again so does McDs brekky Smile

Wilhamenawonka · 11/10/2015 06:55
