Magazine subscription for boys aged 9 - 12

I don't live in the UK but would like to buy a present for my nephew and godsons and thought I could buy a monthly magazine subscription for them BUT because I don't live in the UK I don't know what the boys of this age are reading. Can anyone advise me of what magazines are appropriate?

Meant to say that I did look at First News but the app thing they want to use for the digital version insists on having access to your camera - not sure about that so I am dithering. Prefer iPad subscriptions for anything extra really.

DC don't use the app as they don't have iPads. It seems to work just as well as a bog standard newspaper.

My 11 year old gets First News and is interested in Aquila.

Also a fan of How Stuff Works. I read it myself!

How Things Work is brilliant.

Am a big fan of anything extra we subscribe to being digital here as it means that I can have it on my iPad so it is always available.

We don't subscribe to anything paper as adults - think it is fab not having to bin lots of paper.

I take our old magazines to doctors' and dentists' waiting rooms.

DS got the Beano until last year when he turned 11. He still re-reads the old ones, but isn't bothered about new ones. Now he gets, and loves, the Phoenix.

the Dandy went all celebrity-ish, there were stories about Simon Cowell and Harry Hill and footballers that DS had never heard of.

My 11 year old has loved getting The Phoenix for the past two years. He also loves MOTD.
