In past years I have bought the cheaper end of the market lights but they don't seem to last very long. Can anyone recommend where I can get some. Also wanted to get some curtain lights going to put them up soon to get into the festive mood!!

I've always used this website and been happy with everything I've bought from there.

B&M are very good for lights.

We generally get ours in Homebase or B&Q - sometimes they sell insurance which only costs a couple of £ but will cover you if any of them break. We haven't had a problem with any of those, though - they come in boxes with green, blue, or red lids. Not the cheapest but they do last.
