I'm doing this for my DD for the 1st time, she'll be 18 months at the start and I'd love any suggestions of must buy books. I'm not going to do all Christmas stories - at least not for this year - because I want books we can read all year round but I'd like to maybe alternate with a regular story one night and then a Christmas story the next. I've already bought a version of The Christmas Story and 'Twas The Night Before Christmas

Lovely idea! I'd include Jolly Postman Christmas, a Mr Men Christmas book, That Not My Donkey, Mog Christmas book....for non festive ones maybe some classics like the tiger that came to tea, hungry caterpillar etc. Other books my DS (now nearly 3) likes are Allan Alhberg (Peepo, each peach), Duck in Truck, Dear Zoo, You Choose, My Dad, Peep Inside books. Book People are great for bulk books! You've inspired me, I might wrap up daily books for DS!

Stickman
Alfie's xmas

Littlemousewithcloggson · 04/10/2015 16:15

Stickman
How the Grinch stole Christmas (mine hate the film but love the book)
Both are Christmassy with lovely Christmas messages in the story

Littlemousewithcloggson · 04/10/2015 16:17

Maybe a personalised Christmas book with them in it. One of mine has "littlemousechild saves Christmas" and it still comes out every year

PesoPenguin · 04/10/2015 16:26

I second the Jolly Christmas Postman. Also lots of series of books do a Christmas special. For non Christmassy books, to save money, look on The Book People website for a collection (eg 10 books for £10). They do Julia Donaldson ones etc and actually, they do a winter/ Christmas one.

Book people do a couple of packs of christmassy picture books really cheap.
'Big box of christmas stories- 10 books' for £12.99
Or 'Winter wonderland collection- 10 books' for £11.99
Currently £5 off £30 with code 'TAKEFIVE' and free gift with spend over £40.

Kippers Christmas Eve is lovely. My dc's love stick man, the dinosaur that pooped Christmas and the jolly Christmas postman. We also have a couple of the Mr Men Christmas books. Oh and not forgetting father Christmas needs a wee and father Christmas comes up trumps which are funny.

The velveteen rabbit

Moondancer146 · 04/10/2015 17:00

Brilliant suggestions thank you all. She's already got quite a few Julia Donaldson books and classics like the hungry caterpillar and each peach but I'm definitely going to get the tiger who came to tea and the jolly Christmas postman. Off now to look at the book people too Smile

Christmas in the Mouse House is brilliant.

Father Christmas needs a wee.
Father Christmas comes up trumps.
These books appeal to my childish toilet humour lol.

Cops and Robbers take place on Christmas Eve.

Dear Zoo guy Rod Campbell did a less good 'Dear Santa' my kids liked.

That's not my penguin is kind of christmassy without being too christmassy.

Raymond Brigg's Father Christmas.

Also Raymond Brigg's The Snowman is not actually about Christmas but is christmassy.

I hate Father Christmas needs a wee.

I'd also get a nice nativity story - not one pushing religion but one letting her know what it's about. We like this one www.amazon.co.uk/Nativity-May-Eliot/dp/0552567620/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1443990660&sr=8-3&keywords=the+nativity+book

I LOVE doing a book advent calendar at Christmas. There are some great suggestions for Christmas themed picture books here.

Lucy and Tom's Christmas or the updated version of Lucy and Tom at Christmas is one of our family favourites. I have a box of Christmas books that I get out on the 1st December .
