Non-tacky, non-plasticky, non-tree Christmas decorations?

Every year we have a lovely tree and all of the cards up on strings but the rest of the living areas have next-to-no decorations. Does anyone know where I can buy some "crafty" decorations (-made of things like wood, pottery, straw, etc) for putting on tables, mantels, walls, etc?

Try little independent gift shops etc.
