Not plastic - Xmas presi ideas for 2.9 yo girl & boy ?

I'm a bit stuck on ideas for my daughter and her little chum (boy). There are enough plastic toys about so I'd like to get something a bit different. The little boy has an abundance of energy and concentration is not his strong point so something quite active and physical would be ideal. My dd is much more able to sit and spend time on an activity.
I thought about a puppet theatre for my dd as she'll sit and talk to her toys and role play little scenarios.
Any suggestions gratefully received

I think a puppet theatre is a fab idea! My two still play with theirs (they've had it about 5 years).

Also for the little girl - how about a big mixing bowl full of things to help you "bake" cakes - sprinkles, writing icing etc - I suggest this a lot but my 9 yr old still loves things like this and has done since she was tiny!

wooden castle for DD plus extra figures for her friend? (if you are spending more on her than him)
there are some lovely fairytale ones around if you think she likes that sort of thing
see here

what's your budget?

Look at the wooden toy sets made by Plan Toys. My little boy received a deluxe road system for his 3rd birthday and he loves it! We're so impressed with the quality that we've ordered him the City Station Set for Christmas and suggested to his grandparents that the airport set might be an ideal present. You can get them from Amazon - there's quite a selection of products!
