Online food orders - the good, the bad and the inedible

Anyone have any stand-outs this year? I ordered a Kelly Bronze turkey which was fantastic (and the first one I've ever done, so was thrilled and relieved in equal measure).

I also did an M&S online order which I collected on Christmas Eve morning:

Vegetarian canapé selection box - the little savoury cheese muffins were fabulous, the filo cranberry and brie parcels were good, everything else a bit meh

The stuffing selections were really nice, particularly the little green ball things. Can't remember what they were, but my 5 year old probably ate 5 on his own. Pigs in blankets and the bacon wrapped stuffing with the cranberry on top were both great.

The bread sauce and turkey gravy were lovely, but the cranberries in port were too sweet so had lots left over. The red cabbage was good, but there was too much of it and some has had to be thrown out.

The passionfruit mousse with raspberry coulis was really great, and the pannacotta nice also. Was really disappointed with the Five Gold Rings chocolate pudding though - too heavy and solid to be enjoyable after a huge lunch, and even two days on it's languishing on the kitchen counter.

This was my first year hosting but probably the start of many now, so would be interested to see what everyone else found with this year's online offerings

My M&S Turkey joint was really good. Really didn't like their bread sauce, cranberry sauce and the five gold rings cake was heavy and dry. I was really disappointed in it.

M&S turkey crown was fab,

bought sausagemeat from Waitrose that smelled awful despite being in date, so did "mum's" stuffing with paxo and disrobed walls sausages which was FANTASTIC!

Dippyeggsrock · 02/01/2015 19:02

I agree the five rings cake from M&S was such a disappointment !!

PandasRock · 02/01/2015 19:09

M&S turkey crown was delicious. Nice stuffing, and the best turkey I've had in years, with no fading about at all. I didn't even baste it (got distracted)

The veg/potatoes selection box was ok - most all fine, but the honey roast parsnips were bleurgh.

We had the chocolate/raspberry christmas tree this year, and it went down well. Very rich.

The orange and cranberry christmas pud was nice - good lot of sauce, but too boozy, imo.

We had the passion fruit mousse last year - it was fabulous. Really light. I was really sad we weren't hosting more people this year, so no excuse to over indulge in M&S puddings!

Glad it wasn't just me with the 5 Gold Rings Cake. Eventually admitted defeat and threw a solid lump of it out on Wednesday. I think the lighter desserts are obviously the way to go.

Interesting that everyone enjoyed their M&S turkeys. I'll probably do the Kelly Bronze again next year (this year - eeek!) as there is a farm which rear them a few miles away so it seems silly not to.

Ocado arrived band on time and only one (insignificant) substitution.
Heston Turkey Crown with brining kit was superb - second year running. Served 10 comfortably with leftovers.

WUME · 02/01/2015 22:49

I agree about the M&S turkey crown being delicious. Without doubt, the beat turkey I have ever had

PineappleLump · 03/01/2015 21:01

Actually, did anyone get the M&S Shimmered Mousse Domes? I was rather tempted by those

Ocado arrived on time Christmas eve morning with two sensible subs and a free tin of biscuits for cheese. The frozen macaroons we ordered from ocado were yummy much nicer than the m&s ones we tried at pil.

The waitrose Christmas cake kit was devine, we did it with royal icing but the fondant will get used eventually.

I'll be looking out for the email and getting a slot booked early again next year.

MrsMinton · 03/01/2015 21:34

M&S mushroom Wellington was delicious. I thought the bread sauce was a bit bland.

My morrisons order was brilliant. No missing or substitutions and a gingerbread santa free.

bryonyelf · 03/01/2015 21:34

Marks and spencer 3 bird roast was disgusting.

Doyouthinktheysaurus · 03/01/2015 21:37

Booths pork pies delivered the day before Christmas eve were amazing, the best I've tasted. We live on the south coast so discovering Booths did a Christmas delivery was a treat. Also had a turkey crown which was lovely and a delightful cheese selection.

Ocado delivered all my food without incident or dodgy substitution.

Pippidoeswhatshewants · 03/01/2015 21:39

We ordered our turkey and some side snacks (pigs in blankets, cipollatas, sausage rolls, ...) from Donald Russell.
The best turkey I have ever had, and all the other bits were delicious, too.

Impatientwino · 03/01/2015 22:20

M&S Standard garnish selection (pigs in blankets and stuffing balls) was delicious.

M&S Turkey gravy was far far far too thin, didn't realise until I poured into the pan to heat it and then in desperation had to bung in some bistro chicken gravy granules as that's all I had to hand with 5 minutes to go before serving. Everyone, including a die hard homemade gravy maker commented on how delicious and tasty the gravy was. I didn't tell them!! GrinGrin

M&S easy carve leg of lamb with cranberry glaze was really lovely and simple to prep/carve with lots of people hovering in the kitchen on Boxing Day.

Impatientwino · 03/01/2015 22:22

Bisto not bistro!

PineappleLump · 04/01/2015 20:20

Actually Impatient I agree re the M&S gravy, it was thin.

I pre ordered some stuff from Tesco and when it came to collection day they had run out of everything as they hadn't ordered enough stock. It was a total shambles and what they had managed to get enough stock of wasn't especially nice so never using their Christmas food service again.

SurprisedJerseySpud · 01/03/2015 21:20

I had the M&S turkey crown with bacon and that was all i ordered in and that was yummy. still loads left over mind!
