How old were your DC when they started choosing gifts?

For their siblings/parents/anyone else?

Mine are just turned 3 and 4 and haven't done so yet, but I'm thinking they are probably old enough now as long as I take them shopping very near Christmas no patience yet.

When did yours start doing this? Did they understand and enjoy it?

My dd(7 at the time) chose something for her dad's birthday for the first time this year, using pocket money - just a small thing. It was really touching. I also let the two girls choose something for each other,but with a big steer from me. I help them to make presents for Dh for Christmas, and gifts to gp's are photo calendars or similar.

(younger dd is 5). She doesn't really understand cost vs value yet, so homemade or personal things are best.

My DD's have done this year from their new school. The PTA run a small shop selling things for only a few pounds each, including cards and wrap.

The children can buy what they wish for family etc.
The girls are 4 and 6 and loved it!
DD1 has gone from being excited about getting presents to being more excited to see us open ours from her.

Dd aged 5 has made something each year but wanted to actually buy something this year. I let her loose in Poundland yesterday I said she could choose two things for each person and let her get on with it as she couldn't go over budget!

She chose a box of mint poppets and socks for Daddy, a candle and bubble bath for Grandma, shower gel and toffees for Granda. Dd loved doing it, she handed over the money at the till, wrapped it up and can't wait to hand over the gifts.

About age 5. Limited budget in one location . DH and I take turns to supervise!
Pound land type shop has worked OK. Church bazaar worked OK and this year a Christmas market . age 7+ we have expected him to use his own pocket money ( he has £1.50 a week), before then we supplied a pound or two each.
Younger than 5 he gave people things he had made( with help), sweets, Calender's , pen pots etc.
