So DD wants fairy dust for Christmas...

She's 3. She wants to try flying. She keeps asking when Santa's coming as she's so excited.

Anyone else's kids want something impossible? What on earth do you say?

Fairy dust is easy - you just put a bit of glitter in a tiny jar. You can explain that only fairys fly though. Not even fairy dust can make a human girl fly.

My dd along with the hideous Frozen vanity table really wants a rainbow. Santa can do it apparently.

Give her a lovely little pot full of translucent glitter and a letter written in tiny writing explaining how fairy dust doesn't work on humans, but if she will look after it and keep it in her room all the fairies will be able come and get top-ups on windy nights when they use up their own glitter too fast.

Then throughout the year you can leave the lid off the pot, with a bit of glitter spilled, and another little note saying thankyou from x or y fairy.

My dd was visited by fairies a lot. One day they left her a sparkly shell so she talk to them whenever she wished. She couldn't hear them of course, but they could always hear her. They left her a lot of notes.

Oh I have the PERFECT solution for you! My DD is a preteen now but many years ago she wrote to the fairies asking for some fairy dust because she wanted to fly. I used edible cake sprinkles (not glitter as that looked too suspiciously like glitter :) ) and 'the fairies' wrote her a note with it saying that although it only worked on fairies (because humans are MUCH heavier than fairies) if she sprinkled some on herself she might be able to feel herself get a bit lighter - this was the fairy dust trying to work. It was brilliant because the power of suggestion was enough to make her feel like it was doing something and she was thrilled :)

I so miss these type of Christmas presents. In our house now it's all xboxes and iPhones.

Try Emma Swan (Emmies fairy gardens) on Facebook they are fab. You can get little fairy doors or I got my God daughter a garden in a box which comes with a fairy with hair and eye colour of your choice and edible fairy dust.
Not quite the same as flying yourself but I thought they were pretty cool.

I'm 25 and DMum still addresses one little present to me as "from the elves".

I told my daughter that a bit of fairy dust will give her a good day. Whenever she dabs some on she is always able to tell me about the special thing that happened that day because of the fairy dust.

Love both those rainbow ideas, thanks! Sainsburys did a unicorn family in a style of the old My Little Ponies, Sleisch do unicorn figures, there are fairy/ unicorn Playmobil stuff. My girls have unicorn pillow pets or is she wanting a real one to live in the back garden?

My DS once asked for the northern lights. We put a bit of glitter in a jar and cut a glow stick and poured it in (I saw it to make fairy jars on a website) He was thrilled that the elves bought it on Christmas Eve with a note.

Go to a cake decorating supplies shop you can buy little pots of glitter that can be left as fairy dust.

She means a real one to live in the field next to our house !

My DD was very nearly 11yo when she found out by accident that fairies weren't real. I dread to think how long she'd have believed otherwise
