When to put stockings up

So, I'm thinking about putting tree next week, have never hung stockings on fire, normally just get them out Xmas eve and fill them.
However dds think I should hang them on the fireplace next week as their friends all do.
Is this the norm ?

We hang them up when I put up the rest of the decorations, they are hung from the door knob of the airing cupboard on the landing
It's good because they are upstairs (DCs open them in our bed while we doze ) but not in their rooms which makes filling a lot easier

we usually have them on the fireplace when all the other decorations go up but this thread is making me want to start the tradition of hanging them before bed on Christmas Eve .

Ours go on the end of their beds on Christmas eve, unfortunately I can't do the 2 stocking thing as my dds is mine from when I was a child and my ds's were handmade by my dh nan
