to get my DS 12 an iPhone contract

My DS is at high school now and will be 13 in April.

He has my old iPhone 4 on PAYG but it doesn't hold its charge very well and the home button is broken.

I've struggled with what to get him this year for christmas and thought about getting him an iPhone 5c 16gb on contract as with discounts I can get it for 19.00 a month with an upfront cost of 60.00. This is with o2 and they cap the internet so he can't go over.

Am i crazy to consider it? is it "normal" to get a 12 year old a contract? My husband is concerned he may lose it at school however he takes his other to school and theres never been a problem. I'd consider taking out insurance anyway.

My 10yo has had an iPhone 4 on contract for about six months with no issues. It depends on the kid IMO.

No you're not crazy. My 12 year old son has a 4s on contract, having "proved" himself with his dad's old phone.
It suits me to have the whole family on iPhones, and PAYG is such a ripoff these days.
Ds has always been very careful with his possessions, and he's no different with his phone

If you think it'll be looked after and he'll appreciate an iPhone over a cheaper phone then I would.

£19 isn't too bad, my dd has pay as you go at the moment and the bundle she uses is £15 so we would probably be better off getting a contract when she needs a new phone.

thanks for your comments so far. I agree dillydolly that 19.00 isn't too bad. we already pay 10.00 a month on top ups for him.

My ds is a little older than yours and he's had an iphone contract since last Christmas. He's great with it and very careful.
