For the man who LOVES The Godfather / De Niro, The Family might be worth a punt. It gets mixed reviews and is a little bit marmite, but me and DH both loved. I'm a huge De Niro/Gangster film fan, and it was right up my street as it took the piss out of these. Not for everyone, but its a decent price so might be worth the risk.

RedToothBrush - Thanks for the link, I am sure my geeky DP would love that book! Am ordering now.

Any other ideas for the scientifically-minded yet fun-loving man?

riverboat1 · 19/11/2014 21:00

Oh, and to share my own ideas:

  • Dad is getting a hamper of edibles (I live in France and he is a francophile so that is easy to sort out!)
  • DP is so far getting a wallet. Want to get him some nice fruit beers too since he has recently discovered he likes them. And now the book that RedToothBrush mentioned! Wanted to get him a 'How It Works' magazine subscription, but it turns out they won't deliver to France. Hesitating over concert tickets for the Queen/Adam Lambert tour but I think they're too expensive.
  • FIL is getting a make-your-own wind up car as a little novelty gift: here
Last year I got him this paper airplane calendar which went down very well as well. I need to find him something a bit more substantial to add to his wind up car, probably a couple of Blu Rays since he likes films. Just need to work out which ones.

I can recommend the 'Star Wars Origami' book if you have a geeky dad/DP/FIL who likes to have something to play with after opening! That was a big success from DP's birthday earlier in the year.

RedToothBrush · 19/11/2014 21:16

By the same author xkcd volume 0

In a similar vein Cyanide and Happiness based on the [[http://explosm.net/comics/3748/ online comic of the same name]] (there are a few books for Cyanide and Happiness).

Infographica A book of Infographics decent review here on Daily Telegraph

Another infographic book, but a bit more 'grown up' The Infographic History of the World

(There are quite a lot of books on infographics with good reviews if you have a hunt on Amazon).

FreakinScaryCaaw · 19/11/2014 22:32

dingit that's a lovely painting. As a fellow artist (not as good as you though) I know that feeling of giving a painting as a gift. I'm sure he'll think it's fantastic. Unless his dog's a labrador or something of course Wink

FreakinScaryCaaw · 19/11/2014 22:34

Good stocking ideas Pointless.

I've got dp some books up to now.

DS1 is getting some weights.

DS2 Doctor Who series 8, minecraft papercraft and other things once I see his list.

Both dss get stocking still even though they're teens.

McFox · 19/11/2014 22:37

DH is getting a new tattoo paid for, a set of graphic novels, a Lego clock and a beard soap/oil/comb kit.

McFox · 19/11/2014 22:39

Oh and BIL is getting a vintage maps calendar and a Sex Pistols style measuring jug, complete with safety pin through it, which says 'sex & jugs & rock n roll' on it which I love! Grin

Minminbel · 19/11/2014 22:55

Pos1 Get him a fitbit. If he's remotely interested in fitness they are utterly addictive. And I'll wager if you do, you'll have one too within 6 months. Who knew there could be so much fun in counting your steps? Grin

Pasithea · 19/11/2014 23:08

Nikon d5200 for the other half.

Dingit, what an amazing gift you've created!

blanklook · 20/11/2014 00:45

The guys in the family love TBBT, so I thought a Sheldon Cooper type clothes folding gadget would go down well and their mums would approve.

They even come in child and adult sizes so no-one's left out Xmas Grin

Waterproof storm jacket from Mountain Warehouse sale £99 reduced to £34

Marmite chocolate
Car leather shammy
Socks pack of 4

sunflower49 · 20/11/2014 03:17

dingit that's lovely. I would love one of my dog, my address is... Wink

DDad is getting stuff from justfish.co.uk, a flask with fly fishing flies on it and a note/address book, and a 'knork' (knife/fork in one). He's an avid angler and I thought a knork would be handy so he can eat without having to use two utensils.

Bro in Law and Sister have both asked for just wine. I feel a bit 'meh' about just buying consumables so I've thrown in a nice wine decanter thingy too for them. I might buy them a stocking filler each too. Perhaps bro in law a keyring/pen or small thing like that and Sis a nice lipstick or something like that.

Nephew-Sis told me just give £. I feel again, a bit drab about doing that so if I can buy him a couple of stocking fillers, if I see anything he likes I will do. He's 15, likes smellies and stuff so I might buy him some afershave or hair gel or something. Last year I bought him a sponge and soap that were brown on one side white on the other with 'Arse' and 'face' written as appropriate, which wouldn't be to everyone's taste but went down well.

DP and I don't exchange presents. We both buy one another presents whenever we want to, all year round, and I work more over the xmas period so usually when the new year's over and things are quiet we go halves on a little break somewhere nice. We've always done this and I like it more than having to buy another gift-we don't see one another on xmas day anyway.

DH is getting a course of shooting lessons. He hasn't a clue and thinks it's one of those "drive a fast car round a track" days and is feigning enthusiasm. I'm amused by his fake joy and hope I've got it right with the shooting.
