What do you prefer?

Last year we had white which I thought I prefered but I felt maybe it didn't feel as fun or cosy?

I do actually love berry lights. I think I'm going to try them one day Smile

BedPig2013 · 11/11/2014 08:24

We have multi coloured and I love them! They have different settings so they go on and off or just flash repeatedly, ultimately tacky but then our Christmas tree is a mix of all different baubles too

ArthurShappey · 11/11/2014 08:26

I like white but DS insisted that we buy blue like Thomas the tank engine... So we have blue.

HolgerDanske · 11/11/2014 08:26

Oh my goodness I couldn't cope with that. Don't you have a headache all the time?! Guess not or you wouldn't do it Smile

But no, can't do flashing of any kind.

When I lived in Italy I saw a tree in a window once that had white lights twinkling ever so slowly and that was very pretty. But I've never found a string of lights that has the same soft, calming, twinkle.

Clarabumps · 11/11/2014 08:29

I love coloured lights. I used to always have white (pre children) then I remembered all the coloured lights we used to have on my tree when I was small. There is something very nostalgic about them for me. My tree is classic colours of red and green decorations with loads of wee decorations I've picked up at various Christmas markets. I love my tree
I'm in a quandry as to what we put at the top of the tree. I had a beautiful angel I picked up in a garden centre a few years ago but she seems to have got lost during the house move last year.

What does everyone else have? Star? Angel? Fairy? Santa?

HolgerDanske · 11/11/2014 08:34

Usually a star although I did used to use an angel some years ago.

This year I'm most likely not going to have anything. Partly because it's likely to be quite a small tree, so I don't want it to look top heavy, but also I'm doing a danish country style tree and I think they look lovely without anything on top.

DreamsOfFreddieInTheNight · 11/11/2014 08:36

I have the archbishop of Canterbury on mine.

The problem with led lights is they are a cold colour. If you want warm jewel colours you need the traditional type of bulb. Amazon have nice 200 bulb sets at the moment for a tenner.

We have a fake one (for when DDs were little but I think for environmental reasons too - although now I've got a woodburner- hmm -Christmas tree branches (dry) make great kindling!)
It is absolutely full of tat - things the DC have made etc, baubles they choose (reduced after christmas/cheap shops!), often with bits broken off (3 legged glitter reindeer here!), homemade clothes peg angel and tinfoil and glitter star on top - and tinsel - and coloured lights (LEDs now someone gave me - did have filament ones but I can't get replacement bulbs for them anymore Sad)....it is for the DCs and they love it. We also have ancient homemade paper chains and paper snowflakes dangling in the window we reuse every year after repairs! DP did get some window lights (DCs really wanted some) - but I'm not keen -try and keep them turned off when the novelty wears off!
Nothing tasteful about our Christmas decor -DC led - but then if I didn't have DCs I probably wouldn't bother at all - just call me Scrooge...Wink

WanderingTrolley1 · 11/11/2014 08:38

I much prefer white lights, with white decorations.

WerewolfBarMitzvah · 11/11/2014 08:42

White lights please.
DH has his own tree to ruin with coloured lights, tinsel and lametta.

NorwaySpruce · 11/11/2014 08:49

I don't think LEDs are 'not good' - not having to worry about blown bulbs is great!

But they are very bright. They make the room look like a landing strip Xmas Grin.

Filament bulbs give a softer light.

Housesoftheholy · 11/11/2014 08:55

Haha *ArthurShappey love it blue thomas the tank!

I like a tidy but unmatched tree if that makes sense. Definitely think multiple trees is the way forward but I just don't have room.

Clarabumps · 11/11/2014 09:38

I hardly have any room for one tree.(tiny house)I'm going to have to move the toy kitchen out of the living room to make space. It'll be a trek up the stairs for my imaginary tea. Grr!

Dreams Ha! That's hilarious. Do you really have that on your tree? It's quite funny. I wonder if there's one of the Pope?

Pocketfullofsmiles · 11/11/2014 09:38

My DM has plain red ones which gives of a nice glow and makes the room lovely and cosy and she's a bit of a Christmas tree snob I was never allowed to put my decorations on the tree!

I have been admiring those lights too. They are beautiful I have warm white, which was not easy with new leds, they are too harsh and bright!

However for nostalgia sake one year would love the old mutli coloured type.

Tinsel was un fairly attacked in my opinion, and I am glad its being embraced again, the smell of tinsel is the smell of xmas.

Jesus tree topper. WOW!

DreamsOfFreddieInTheNight · 11/11/2014 09:41

Multi coloured - non led

MrsBungle · 11/11/2014 09:41

Multicoloured every time. I know people think they are naff but balls to them and their dull, colourless lights and one colour themed trees!

I couldn't agree more! Grin

DreamsOfFreddieInTheNight · 11/11/2014 09:43

Led lights

Sort of defeats the purpose, lights are supposed to give a warm and cosy glow but a bright harsh visual attack.

Dreams, Your tree is gorgeous, its so long since I have seen proper mulit coloured...it is more exciting to look at...

where would I get old fashioned coloured lights like that ?

ZeViteVitchofCwismas · 11/11/2014 09:49

There is nothing naff about Dreams 1st tree at all

123Jump · 11/11/2014 09:52

We have a combination. I used to have all white non LED and tasteful glass baubles, placed with military precision on the tree- not to be touched!
But with small DC things change.
In the kitchen we have non LED white lights, threaded through wreaths above the cupboards.
In the living room we have the same over the mantlepiece.
However, the tv room, where we have the tree is a step into gaudy territory.
Real tree, with non LED coloured fairy lights. Hundreds of them, Grin! Also have coloured retro decorations, which the DC can put on wherever they like, ( I usually have to do a little re-arranging, otherwise half the tree is heaving and the other half bare.) Musical snow globes and various christmas ornaments litter the shelves and recesses.
When I was little I remember the tree with such fondness. My mum is very traditional, and never put the tree up until near Christmas. I would spend hours looking at it, I just loved the coloured lights and sweet old fashioned decorations.
So I feel kids maybe prefer that sort of gaudiness? I have 3 DC all excited about Christmas. One day they won't give a crap about the tree, and I can have tasteful white lights and glass baubles.
Tinsel is allowed, but I have managed to convince them to use it to decorate their beds each year,Grin!

Homebase sell those colures lights. That is where we buy ours.

ByTheWishingWell · 11/11/2014 09:55

White lights for me. With a two colour scheme for the decorations. But I think brightly coloured ones and lots of wonderfully tacky and mismatched decorations tend to be more appreciated by children, so we will be swapping over next year, when DD is 2.
