I really need a good 'out of the box idea for my mother' she's had a hard time lately and I want to get her something special! However she is particular about what she likes! Hates candles (thinks they are fire hazards),items such as bath bombs she doesn't like, clothes and toiletries are a no go area as she has uses the same products and shops from the same shops that she's frequented for the past 30 years! I already have got her a dressing gown and socks ( which she requested) any other ideas? Any ideas would be great!

I got my dad theatre vouchers which went down very well for his birthday this year. Now what the heck to get him for Xmas???

I'm a bit partial to Fortum and mason for a special treat. They do some awesome biccies.....

Theatre vouchers are a nice idea! I think she'd like a nice box of biscuits!

Would your dad appreciate a bhs hamper has nice wine and foods! I'd get my mum one she doesn't drink alcohol and again unsurprisingly is particular about certain foods ie what she'd eat etc

We get my DMiL a hamper that we put together for her. We raid Waitrose for stuff, plus the local farm shops and the specialist section of Sainsburys.
Things like the Dorset Cereals variety pack of mini boxes. Tiny tins of dressed lobster. Some of the nice ready meals that come in sachets and can live in a cupboard. Small bottles of wine. Nice coffee. Nibbly nuts etc. etc.
Everything gets individually wrapped and put in a big box.

It takes her ages to unwrap, and then she dips into it for treats and it lasts her a good 4-6 months.

I'm interested in this thread for my MIL. She is very difficult to buy for!
We did her up what I thought was a lovely hamper last year and picked all things I know she and FIL would like but I've a feeling she gave most of it away. She even returned the hamper to me!

makingdoo - we saved the hamper and now it gets recycled/refilled every year

If anybody is thinking biscuits, Biscuiteers make the most beautiful tins and if you sign up to their mailing list they send you a code for £5 off a tin. I'm going to order the Nutcracker set for my ballet-obsessed Mum.

Could you take her out for a meal (I'm getting my mum afternoon tea)

Has your Mum got GC or a dog ? She might like a small album of photos of places that were or are important to her. Such as the house she was born in, photos of her Mum and Dad, an important landscape, where she met your Dad etc. a photo of you, where she went to school etc. When my husband had an important birthday I went around videoing his important places and interviewing people who had known him, the church he was a choir boy in etc and then made it into a film on a CD. He liked that.

I also made an album of my GC on PHotobox of all my photos of him, plus my Mum and Dad, my husband and I when we were small and my DD when she was small. It went down a bomb. My daughter loved it. One of my a DILs made me one of their wedding and I loved it.

Does she read? Would she enjoy something like a kindle in a lovely case?
A handbag? Perfume? Digital photo frame with pictures already uploaded?

saiyme09 · 02/11/2014 20:55

Some lovely ideas on this thread.

MrsCakes No chance of reusing the hamper basket this year as I've used it as a log basket ever since. Maybe she returned it so we would refill it ..........
