Dvd for an 8 year old?

Does anyone have any ideas what films/programmes 8 yr olds are into these days? Looking for my nephew. Don't want to ask his parents as they'll suggest money like every other year!

I think the Dr Seuss DVD's are a fairly safe bet; lorax, cat in a hat type stuff.

My nearly 8yo would find the Dr Seuss films too young. He loves:

The Simpsons

My 8yr old has definately outgrown Dr Seuss. We have tons of DVDs so we have most films but she likes

Home Alone

The Roman Mysteries collection is educational and riveting ar the same time. My kids aged 11,9 and 7 love the films and the books.
Asterix and Tintin collections also suit most ages.

Ds is 8 and may be a bit weird but likes

Ludways - your daughter might like Stripes then. It's about a zebra who wants to be a racehorse.

Retro is good and could be a nice change. Mine like Swallows and Amazons, 101 Dalmations, original Railway Children with Jenny Agguter and The Parent Trap (although they like the more recent Lindsey Logan version unfortunately).

How to train your dragon 2 and the Lego movie are fairly recent on DVD. Less chance of duplicates.

The despicable me and Madagascar are both hits with DS.

The diary of a wimpy kid films are great

Shorts is good and not well known so good chance they haven't seen it yet.

For something a bit different you could try the old Charlie chapman black and white movies, my DD, same age, loves watching these with us

Pleased to see some mentions of ghibli! DD (7) is getting Kiki's delivery service for Xmas (along with a Totoro tshirt)

I have to say though I wouldn't get a DVD for a child unless I really knew what they liked/didn't like and what they already had. DVDs are so cheap these days you can't really risk getting recent popular films because it's so likely they already have them (IME anyway)
