A Christmas story is hilarious, not so well known in the UK.

MollyBdenum · 24/10/2014 17:04

The Greatesr Store in the World and The Bishop's Wife.

ChippyMinton · 24/10/2014 18:49

Another vote for Christmas with the Kranks

Howaboutthisone · 24/10/2014 19:46

Have to agree with pp

Jingle all the way
Muppets Christmas carol
Christmas with the kranks- sky plus'd it last year and have managed to keep it! It's become my absolute Christmas guilty pleasure!

Bought Arthur Christmas for this Christmas Eve this year as I think the kids attention won't be held by Santa Claus the movie yet!

Howaboutthisone · 24/10/2014 19:47

Greatest Store in the World sounds fabSmile

BiscuitsAreMyDownfall · 24/10/2014 20:04

Home Alone not associated with Christmas Confused It's actually illegal to watch it at any other time of the year. Fact. Grin

My fave films are:

Meet Me in St Louis
Nativity 1 and 2
Love Actually
and of course Home Alone 1 and 2. (We did try to watch HA4, but turned it off after about 10 mins)

AlspookaPicnicCasket · 24/10/2014 20:12

I like one called 'The Christmas Card' about a soldier who receives a card from an unknown lady, telling him about her town. He decides to go and visit when he's sent home from Iraq and - well, it's a festive romance so I bet you can't figure out what happens next! It tends to turn up on the Christmas 24 film channel on sky... I just love it.

MrsCakesPrecognition · 24/10/2014 20:14

The Flint Street Nativity is beyond brilliant.

noblegiraffe · 24/10/2014 20:17

The best Christmas film ever is Bernard and the Genie, a Richard Curtis film from 1991. Alan Cumming as Bernard, Lenny Henry as the genie, and Rowan Atkinson as the baddie boss. So funny. "I wish this chair was Melvyn Bragg" [chair turns into Melvyn Bragg] "I wish it wasn't! Sorry Melvyn!"

But no one has ever heard of it, it's never on TV and I had to buy a pirated DVD that was recorded from an old VHS copy just to get my hands on it.

Hairylegs47 · 24/10/2014 20:21

The Fourth Wiseman
I saw it years ago and loved it, but have yet to find the DVzd.
I also saw an updated It's a wonderful life, but it was a woman who took on George's role. I liked it better than the original.

EATmum · 24/10/2014 20:26

Polar Express is family favourite.

I also (clearly waiting for disdain to pour down) regularly watch Love Actually around Christmas. And When Harry Met Sally (though it's stretching a point to make it a Christmas movie, but that wouldn't stop me from watching it at any time of the year)

Englishgirlinwales22 · 24/10/2014 20:26

A film called joyeux noel is a fantastic Christmas film and relatively unknown. Centres around the Christmas day truce during world war I where they played football together and has both french and german subtitles at times. A really touching film

currieaddict · 24/10/2014 21:46

Any of the made for TV Christmas movies on the likes of Christmas 24 or true christmas. I could park my arse with coffee at 9 and not love until bed time!

myotherusernameisbetter · 24/10/2014 22:06

Jack Frost

....and a bit of a cheat because it's about Thanksgivng not Christmas, but it has to be Trains, Planes and Automobiles - classic.

Edward Scissorhands maybe?

LaurieFairyCake · 24/10/2014 22:08

Noel

With Susan Sarandon

It's lovely

Riverland · 24/10/2014 22:13

Probably not lesser known, but not mentioned here yet..

It's a wonderful life. (Jimmy Stewart.)

While you're at it, you could go a bit further into oldie but goodies and watch 'Harvey' which is a truly fab family film, perfect afternoon by the fire fodder.

ConstantlyCooking · 25/10/2014 00:31

I remember Bernie and the Genie and am surprised it isn't shown more regularly at Christmas. I love good christmas films, and think it's a shame that we are generally overwhelmed by mediocre films rather than seeing some repeats of these. As an aside maybe Greatest Store will be repeated now that PC is Doctor Who!

herecomesthsun · 25/10/2014 05:14

is Die Hard suitable for a 2 and 7 year old? empire list

LaurieFairyCake · 25/10/2014 08:39

Really not.

'Yippaykai A Motherfucker'

Think they're 15's Grin

shakemysilliesout · 25/10/2014 09:26

Love love the Christmas card.

All the ones listed here are the main ones! You all need to watch Christmas 24 for Christmas shoes, a very merry mix up and all I want for Christmas and annie claus is coming to town. These movies are easy to watch. The baddie always drives a nice car and has a cell phone, the good guy loves his mom and does woodwork. The girl always has lovely coats.

Souper · 25/10/2014 11:37

Yes Bernard and the Genie!

ilovelamp82 · 25/10/2014 12:52

While you were sleeping. Love it, good snuggling up on a Sunday feel good film.

LokiBear · 25/10/2014 13:38

Scrooged with Bill Murray. Plus any cheesy channel 5 made for tv film.

RedButtonhole · 25/10/2014 13:44

The Nightmare Before Christmas if you want something a bit different.

DS loves Arthur Christmas

I also like the Christmas episode of Mr. Bean where he gets the turkey stuck on his head Grin

Serendipity...a lovely rom com, set in manhattan at Christmas time, with John Cusak(swoon)
