Recommend me a couple of advent calendars

I am looking for gifty advent calendars for my children. DS, who is 7, has had and loved the lego city one and the lego star wars one. Are they different enough each year to get him the star wars one again? Or is there anything similar you could recommend. Not too worried about price as I count it as part of their presents.
My dd is 10 and very over playing with toys - I was wondering if there was a make up or nail varnish type advent calendar that anyone has found. Or anything your ten year old daughter have loved?
Thanks

This one?

Pricey but I guess you get what you pay for...

RupertTheBear · 12/10/2014 20:43

It's beautiful- but a step too far price wise! Has anyone seen anything a bit more for children?
Might get that for myself though!

I found this link which mentions an avon nail varnish gift set which could be used as an advent calendar (only has 12 though, but suggests one every other day) which might work for your DD?

Can't see it anywhere on the avon website however, might not be available yet...

RupertTheBear · 13/10/2014 20:54

Thanks for that - it could work if I can persuade her to only open one every other day! I'll keep looking for it.

this might be too young. Not endorsing it, just found it and thought of your thread Grin

nocutsnobuttsnococonuts · 15/10/2014 11:31

could u make your own?

im doing a lego mini figure one for my 2 have collected cheapish figs off ebay and car boots. could work with girly bits can get make up bits in £1 shop and claires when they have a sale on!Grin

AcheyJakey · 16/10/2014 11:08

If your 7 year old still believes in Father Christmas there's This but maybe too expensive particular as thinking two calendars. Unless your 10 year old would enjoy doing it for her brother!

DD would love that john Lewis nail varnish one!

RupertTheBear · 16/10/2014 20:25

Some great ideas thank you.
I might get dd this
www.ciatelondon.com/uk/mini-mani-manor?route=mini-mani-manor-category (it's cheaper on amazon)
As for DS - he loved his lego star wars one last year and I would get him this years one as long as they are different enough each year. Does anyone know?

I have bought the playmobil christmas toy shop One for DS 6 yo. . I think it was £18 on amazon. We had the playmobil winter wonderland type forest scene one last year and it was brilliant.

goingloombandcrazy · 16/10/2014 22:28

The Lego advent calendars are different each year including star wars :-)

stealthsquiggle · 16/10/2014 22:41

Ah, but how different are they? I was about to post pretty much the same challenge, except DC the other way round - 12yo DS and 8 yo DD...any slightly "older" follow ons to Lego and Playmobil welcome..

sleepdodger · 16/10/2014 23:30

In selfridges primary concession they had one for a tenner with jewellery in- 10 year old quality Wink

FreddoBaggyMac · 17/10/2014 14:53

I've just bought this for my DD who is 10 and a bit old for the lego and playmobile ones:

nutcracker charm advent calendar

It arrived today and looks lovely, Amazon are saying it's now unavailable so I'm glad I got it when I did (Not much help to you sorry!). I was in two minds whether to go for this one which you can order from US amazon

charm advent (the price is OK even with postage if you go for non priority shipping)

stealthsquiggle · 17/10/2014 15:36

Freddo that is gorgeous, and now that I have an order confirmation I am prepared to share that it is also available from notonthehighstreet Smile . That's DD sorted.

Now - 12yo boys - any brilliant ideas?

stealthsquiggle · 17/10/2014 17:02

Thanks to this thread, I think I have it sorted. It occurred to me that what DS liked best about the Lego calendars that he has had was the minifigures. So I have ordered a string of little felt buckets from John Lewis, and now I am hunting down minifigures on eBay Grin.

Biggles398 · 17/10/2014 19:16

Freddo has mentioned the nutcracker calendar and they also do a "story of Christmas" one. They look lovely. I've ordered the Christmas one!

BirdingWidow · 18/10/2014 18:13

Thank you so much for the nutcracker advent calendar tip. have just bought one from NOTHS for my goddaughter (turning 8) who will be completely thrilled!

soundlikemymother · 18/10/2014 18:48

I got this for my ds who is 3, its empty but I love the idea of filling up the little drawers with sweets and toys.

SpainToWin · 18/10/2014 19:52

I really like this one for older DDs.

Cosmetic Advent Calendar

stealthsquiggle · 18/10/2014 19:54

A catalogue which arrived this morning - Museum Collection, I think, had the nutcracker one in as well - same price, though.

stealthsquiggle · 18/10/2014 20:29

Museum Selection. Close enough.
